Aurora R4 motherboard with GTX 1050 TI no boot

Hi everyone,

I'm running a small computer repair business.
I was handed over an older Alienware Aurora R4 desktop.
The client bought a new GPU (Nvidia GTX 1050 TI) for it and got a single boot from it after install.
After this full boot no response ever came from the GPU, the PC was never able to completely boot again and the beep code was 6 beeps (meaning something should be wrong with the GPU).

I have reset the CMOS with no success, then tried the other PCI port with still no results.
Then I used the GTX 1050 TI in a working desktop (after driver install!) with success.

Right now I see 2 possible scenario's but I'm still blown backwards by the fact that he got 1 boot out of it before.
1: There are compatibility issues between the R4's motherboard and the GTX 1050 TI
2: The motherboard is partially broken

I want to be very careful in handeling this sort of things, that's why I don't like to try another working GPU on his motherboard.

Could someone give my any ideas or confirmations on this matter?
Is there any information on the compatibility of that motherboard and GPU?
Is this an known issue? Could there be other causes?
Or do you guys also fear there are issues with the mb and it should be replaced?

Many thanks for your help!

Secure Boot must be OFF and LEGACY CSM ON for the card to work.

When installing an after-market graphics card into a certified Windows 8 PC with UEFI enabled, the s...

Re: Aurora R4 motherboard with GTX 1050 TI no boot

Problem is that this Aurora R4 doesn't seem to have ANY video output ports on the motherboard as far as I can see.

That's why I did a manual CMOS reset by changing the CMOS Jumper.

It can certainly be that this CMOS is not correctly configured by default.

How do you advise me to change de BIOS settings without video output? Or do you suggest to temporarely use a second GPU to enable the correct BIOS settings?

Many thanks for your answer!

I don't like to try another working GPU on his motherboard.

Well, that's a basic trouble-shooting step ... make machine as basic as possible or try other combination of parts to see where "problem follows".

These are my least favorite repairs ... where an unqualified person has started the repair or upgrade and it went bad. Most common mis-step is not dissipating residual "flea" power before swapping parts. Who knows, maybe machine wasn't even unplugged on that first swap.

There is nothing really special about any Alienware desktop. The Aurora-R4 just has a MSI motherboard with a custom BIOS.

Don't get too freaked-out by the liquid-cooling or MIO-Board:

I have tested with a GTX 770, and the same problem occured (6 beeps, no boot).

So this problem is probably not related to BIOS settings? Or can I be wrong

Not that the Aurora-R4 is particularly old, but that's a fairly new thing ... having on-board or Intel IGP on motherboards intended to mostly use dedicated PCIe Add-in video cards.

I hope you downloaded PDF manuals.

I've tried with a GTX 770 which gave the same error(code) of 6 beeps.

I understand.

It does make the troubleshouting a lot harder in this case.

As you can see in my comment bellow it didn't work with a GTX 770 either, anymore thoughts on the matter?

Then something else is bad (maybe power-supply or motherboard).

I hope you took the time to read the long guide I linked you to.

Did you try it in both slots?

Is there 12volts on PCIe power-cables?
