CPU upgrade options for X51 R2
Hello, Could someone please help me with a CPU upgrade for my son's Alienware X51 R2(early 2013)?
I have searched this forum & internet, and based on what I read, hope I can upgrade this computer's CPU to either of these listed below, but would like to know if anyone has been successful with an upgrade using these CPU's in the X51 R2?
- Intel Core i7-4770 Haswell Quad-Core 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W
- Intel Core i7-4790 Haswell Quad-Core 3.6GHz LGA 1150 84W
- Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 3.6GHz LGA 1150 84W -- NOTE: I only included this overclock version because of this note I found in the latest BIOS update(A07) from Dell's website: Enhancements: Enhanced for i7-4790K CPU support.
I just purchased the 330W upgraded power supply and Dell's recommended graphics card: PNY XLR8 GeForce GTX 750 Ti OC-2 GB so I'm getting information so I can upgrade the CPU in a few months.
Thank you in advance for any advice/help.
KCL

These two have been shipped with the R2...owners have expressed concern about CPU temps running up to 90C, so the 4790K would appear to be a risky option unless you have expensive cooling gear.
please keep in mind the R2 has a fairly out of date motherboard chipset, so your options are limited in the long term. The general view is that an i5 CPU is most sensible and cost effective option

Hi KCL,
I'm going to agree with Jonas. I think, for gaming, you're going to be better off with an i5 series. I wouldn't seriously recommend an i7 unless you were trying to do some pretty heavy multimedia creation.
In addition to this, specifically the i7-4790K, is made to be a very high-end enthusiast part with overclocking capability. Unless I've missed my mark, the X51 R2 can't overclock it's CPUs; making this part particularly pointless to invest in.
Hope this helps!
