There is no indication that it does or not.

Hi zviper,
These are the validated CPUs for the Aurora R5.
6th Generation Intel® Core™ i3
6th Generation Intel® Core™ i5/i5K
6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7/i7K
The i7-7700k will not be supported, the motherboard and chipset are completely different.

An odd statement to make, it almost sounds factual. The R5 motherboard & chipset are perfectly suited for 7700k, as Intel designed 7700k to be backwards compatible with all Z170 socket 1151 motherboards when given a standard Bios update. The ability for a Z170 board to run Kabylake is near universal now due to manufacturer commitment. It is a more difficult confession for staff to make, perhaps, that '7700k will not be supported' (enter optional reason _____) 'because we refused to commit to creating for our buyers the simple easy Bios update those R5s needed' ... an 'alternative fact', I suppose ... 'Bios update withheld on purpose' ... 'our OEM failed at the update where other OEMs easily succeeded in theirs', take your pick
the motherboard and chipset are completely different
no need here for internet rumors

Now that the explanation's been cleaned up a bit (we should all know by now that socket 1151 Skylake boards can upgrade to 7700k so long as there was manufacturer commitment to offer a simple Bios update), Alienware's explanation can be construed (by me anyways) that the R5 was tested - it failed validation for reasons unknown - & deemed an incompetent unfit indefensible platform from which to play host to 7700k. The R5 owner is advised to buy a completely new desktop if they wish to run a new CPU, that is how bad the R5 performed when given a behind-the-scenes BIOS firmware flash in the Alien Lab: it became unwarrantable > no Bios update > all R5s are now dead-end products > only competently built systems can run 7700k > R5 is not one of them, is how I read that. Sad, really. But refreshing to have flushed out the truth on the matter
@Viper: your mthrbrd & chipset are of course proper, but your R5 as a system is an unfit platform for the upgrade. Now you know

That system failed the validation tests with that processor, so it was not possible to offer that configuration.
What you're saying is a reality in non-OEM manufacturers, some of them released bios updates to make the CPU compatible, but Dell/Alienware does not just sell motherboards, we distribute the entire system and therefore if the validation fails in any of its stages, we can not risk the good functioning of a high end computer just to launch a new CPU on an existing model.
For this same reason we launched a new revision for this system, the Aurora R6, supporting the Intel 7th Gen CPUs.

It's unfortunate and sad that so little effort was put forth on this. Even my Clevo laptops that were originally designed for 6700K utilize 7700K flawlessly with nothing more than a BIOS update. The lack of effort creates a compelling reason to avoid purchasing an Alienware desktop. If you have to buy a new desktop to get such a basic upgrade that the rest of the world is able to freely enjoy, how is that any different than wasting money on a disposable BGA notebook?
