Help!! Internal usb 3.0 connections question with aurora r4

Jump to solution

Ok so i know that there are the two main internal plug ins that power the front and rear usb 3.0 ports, but I'm wanting to add an internal drive like this item http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820223120. My question is, are there any internal ports in which I can connect this blue usb 3.0 connector to? Really wanting to add an internal card reader with usb 3.0 ports. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Open and take a look.

If existing top-panel USB-3 ports connect to Aurora R4 motherboard with standard (new style) USB-3 header, then you could use that ... effectively moving them to the front.

If not, or if you want to keep the existing stock top-panel USB-3 ports ... I think you would need to install a PCIe USB-3 card that supplied that "internal form-factor" USB-3 interface header. They aren't that much.

Choose this card wisely because you can only install two ... ever. None if running 2 video cards.

thats part of my problem tho, I use the top usb 3.0 port regularly. also I have two gtx 760ti sli installed so im kinda out of luck on the pci card. I had thought about that in the past but then i opened my case and realized that the two gpu's were completely blocking the other pci ports. Guess i may just have to settle for your first option. Would the top usb 3.0 port become useless if i ran the header to the new ports which i plan on installing?

It's a mATX case. With SLI video cards, you can't connect any additional USB-3 ports to the system buss. To do that you would have to do something like upgrading to a single nvidia 780.

There might be an after-market internal hub device that splits that USB-3 header but if you get all 4 ports going at once, you will be bandwidth limited. USB-3 isn't all that fast anyway and is CPU bound.

Personally, if I wanted to keep the existing top USB-3 ports (not sure about reasoning here) ... I would install a nice externally powered USB-3 hub on desk and call it a day. However, it will still just split bandwidth of one of the rear USB-3 ports.

Yeah thanks for your reponses. I actually just use the front usb 3.0 port for my flash drive, my rear 3.0 port is my external hard drive. Those are the only two 3.0 devices i own, so i guess anymore than the original two is kinda overkill for me. The initial reason for adding another internal drive was for SD card reading. I'm just gonna buy a regular SATA card reader, and stick with the two stock 3.0's for now. Thanks so much for your advice. I'm glad you talked me out of it lol.

This might work:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/22397/ele-1275/USB30_20-Pin_Female_to_2x_USB30_20-Pin_Male_Y_Adapt...

However, obviously ... 2+2=4  USB-3 ports but still sharing the bandwidth of Two USB-3 ports. Might not matter as long as you only use one or two concurrently or only one from each side concurrently.

The initial reason for adding another internal drive was for SD card reading.

I got the optional "Alienware 19-in-1 Media Card Reader". In connects on one of the FlexBay ports on the MIO-Board.

The MIO-Board has an internal USB-2.0 hub that drives it's two proprietary USB-2.0 ports (aka FlexBay). I have the "Alienware 19-in-1 Media Card Reader" and "Alienware BlueTooth module" connected there.

You can call Dell Spare Parts at 1-800-357-3355 and ask for the part number, prices, and availability.

I also sent Dell Chris_M a message, so if he has the Part Numbers, he will post them here.
