Are there any issues with swapping my GTX 980 card with a 980 TI card? I am looking at only one card and not a SLI configuration. Are there any issues with card size or a need for special driver updates? Thanks.
It should work, but the performance difference is marginal compared to your current card. IMHO, not worth the cost when you already have a 980.

I have a 980TI and before, had a 980 GTX (in the graphics amp for an alienware 15). You should have no problems just get the most current driver on nvidia's site since you are going form a 980 to the Ti.
Thanks for the info concerning the graphics amplifier but I would feel more at ease if someone actually used the card in the Area 51 R2. I've been reading that the card runs hotter so I'm wondering if there will be any issues.
It's a reference model right now. Of course it's going to run hotter since all cards are the same with different branding and no "extra" cooling like some cards have. The worst issue you are going to have is it runs a little warm (which is not going to cause any issues). You are worrying too much over nothing. It will work and you will be fine.
i am running 3 way SLI with 980ti's no issues at all! temps just slightly above 70c when fully loaded.
Hope this helps
