M14x R2 freezes randomly and becomes non responsive. Freezes with out blue screen

While i doing anything web browser or play league of legend (light games)I get random freezes. while doing anything from word processing to gaming.

In result the screen becomes frozen and the fans decide to get noisy and keep noisy until i have to hold power button for shut it down.

The only way to shut down is to hold the power button. I only get random freezes with out blue-screen.

I assume this may be a motherboard issue or hard drive issue. But I'm no expert.

Things I've tried:
re-install windows.
update bios. last ver A09
Turn off speedstep
Upgrading all driver software

Last thing i have done is run F12 and I ran the diagnostics and everything has passed.

I have run AlienAutopsy everything seen like perfect and healthy

None of these have helped I get the freezes usually every 2-4 days. It's kind of annoying. Please help me. I am using this laptop everyday in school.

Does anyone else have this issue or a solution:

Thanks

Hi,

I would suggest you to scan you computer for viruses using the security software installed on the computer. You may refer to the following link for more details. http://dell.to/QaMLdU
Virus or spy-wares might be a cause for the system to  freeze. In case the step doesn't help, we would have to do the PC Restore (Factory Image). Please refer the following link to perform PC Restore. http://bitly.com/KTY2az
Please write back to us if you have any further questions.

Hello Tuan,

Appreciate the effort to troubleshoot the issue. I would request you to check if the system is overheating when it freezes. In addition, there are few steps I would suggest which might be helpful.

Cleaning the air vents of the computer.
-- Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust thereby not allowing heat and air to pass through.
-- Turn off the System.
-- Unplug the AC Adapter.
-- Remove the Battery, for instructions on how to remove the battery see the Service Manual.
-- Use Compressed Air to blow the dust out of the vents.

I would also suggest running the Microsoft Fix it for the performance issue will help. Please refer to the link mentioned below for the Microsoft fix it.
Run the Performance Troubleshooter
Run the Maintenance Troubleshooter

For more details, please follow the link mentioned below.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&docid=DSN_362026&isLegacy=true
Please try the steps and write back to us. I’d be glad to assist further.

Hi Allan

Thanks for fast respond.

I just receive my laptop last weeks . I don't think any dust in vents air and fans.

I already run Run both  Performance Troubleshooter,Run the Maintenance Troubleshooter, before I run diagnostics from F12 . Still no result . Random Freezes keep show up with out any reason.

Hi Tuanvo,

Thank you for replying.
I would suggest checking the Reliability Monitor, which would tell us what exactly is causing the computer to freeze.
-- Click Start.
-- In Search Programs and Files tab, type; "reliability".
-- The option as View Reliability History comes up.
-- Open the program.
-- Check for the Critical events and please note down which program is causing the computer to freeze.

Please capture the error and write back to us. I'd be glad to assist further.

The user said he installed Windows again. How can it still be a Virus problem Allan-D?

I had this same problem and i got my motherboard changed. Now it seems to be working fine but i'm not sure for how long.

Hi, did you ever get an answer to the problem?  my  M14XR2  is doing the same thing.... Freezes randomly when videos are playing and I have to restart the computer each time,  it's getting annoying.

I have had this freezing issue since my very first day with this computer (M14x R2 - top of the line, maxed components), and it still happens frequently. I have at least one random freeze per day of use, and it happens during trivial use like surfing the internet, checking e-mail, or watching a youtube video.

It's very frustrating. Did you ever resolve your issue?

I tried to have it resolved by Alienware tech support, but they were useless. They ran a bunch of standard diagnostics and nothing turned up. I believe I got a lemon of a laptop from Alienware and this will definitely be the last one of these computers I will ever buy.

I highly recommend you contact dell technical support and ask them for system exchange, I tried many step and suggest but none of them can fix that issue, even they replaced for me 2x Motherboard, 2 x CPU, 1 x SSD 1x WIRELESS CARD. DVD drive not replace.after all i think something wrong with the cable owe wire inside system not relate with the hardware problem. However, Try to ask them for system exchange.

FINALLY...Boys and girls...the problem on M14X R2 by freezing randomly without a BSOD (blue screen of dead) is created by the DVD ROM. Take out the back cover, unplug the battery and the power supply (on the other way order sorry), then disconnect the DVD cable. Put back the battery and power cord then boot. Your computer will work normal forever like nothing ever happen before. Replace the DVD ROM for 20 bucks, not the motherboard etc., like the dell incompetent service wants, which will not solve your problem anyway. Dell should give me credit for this. Enjoy. For more support you can contact me at <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy>. Bye

I will give this a try and report back.

I have a suspicion that it is a defective network card, since the freezing most frequently occurs when I am on a webpage. If it does not work, I am considering installing a new network card...any other suggestions?

The DVD Rom is not the problem. My Blu-Ray drive went bad and now I no longer have a DVD drive and my laptop still freezes. I've done everything I can possibly think of and it still is messed up.

What finally fixed mine from freezing,  was disabling the 32gb msata ssd cache...  I also tried everything, and this was the only thing that fixed it,  it does make your computer boot slower but it's a lot better than having it freeze all the time...
