M15x - Question about upgrading CPU / GPU

Hello all!

I purchased an Alienware M15x Laptop a couple months ago and I've begun to realize that it does not perform as well as I need it to. I would like to upgrade my CPU and GPU, and I have a few questions regarding this process:

1) Is there even the option to send my M15x in to be upgraded and if so, how would I go about setting this up?
2) Will upgrading the CPU and / or GPU on my system void Dell's warranty?

Thank you,

- Kick

Please pardon my ignorance, I did not see the Teardown videos. Anyway, I would still like to know if these upgrades would void my warranty (I bet they will if I mess up, but I want to know if they will void my warranty even if they are successful).

Added parts have their own warranty. The PC warranty only supports the parts we originally shipped and will not be voided by added parts. In any troubleshooting, we will ask you to remove the added parts.

Hi Chris,

Can we actually order a more powerful CPU/GPU for the M15x from Dell?

I made some enquiries around late 2010 and the reply was that its not supported. =(

Thanks,

Noel Ho

Noel Ho,

You can contact Spare Parts 800-357-3355 and see if any of the Dell validated parts are available for sale.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that list =)

I am guessing that is a contact number for USA. Is there one for New Zealand and are the same parts list available for New Zealand?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the list, Chris!

I still have not moved on upgrading my machine as I had hoped to five months ago, but I will be in a week or two. If I were to upgrade my graphics card from a GTX240M to a GTX460M, would I be sending the old card (240m) to Dell and then receiving the new card (460m) as a replacement, or would I just be buying a 460m?

Thanks for all the help,

- Oliver "Kickimanjaro" V

No, you would keep your original part, but you can still sell it on ebay or on a forum to raise some money for the new card.

Also check out these true.  Part Nr. for the 6970m is V9XKH

Edit: I want to add that the M15x works perfectly fine with the 920xm / 940xm and the 6 cell standard battery, the only drawback is the battery life time since the extreme processors use a lot more power. So unless you downclock it you want to have the 9 cell battery when you plan to work without plugging in the AC adapter.
