M17x-R3, Video Card Upgrade, ATI version
Hi All
I decided I need an upgrade my AMD Ati card for my Alienware M17x R3
I have no idea what would be a better/compatible card, would it also have to be an ATI/AMD?

These are the Dell validated video cards for the M17x-R3. The first number is the Dell kit part number =
RFYN9 N12E-GTX2 GeForce GTX580m Kit (Video card 3MF8R + Thermal Assembly V1K2G)
8H4G6 N12E-GS GeForce GTX560m Kit (Video card YT99J + Thermal Assembly J9H7X)
CK7HW AMD Blackcomb XTX Radeon HD6990m Kit (Video Card RDRGR + Thermal Assembly YHP1P)
WFWCW AMD Blackcomb XT Radeon HD6970m Kit (Video card V9XKH + Thermal Assembly YHP1P)
5MKH5 AMD Granville Pro Radeon HD6870m Kit (Video card V5TGF + Thermal Assembly VH0YK)

I have been looking around the internet, two more AMD cards came up,
the amd 7970m and the 8970m, would these be compatible with Alienware Mx17 r3?
can I order any of these cards through dell? I assume I would have to contact the spare parts department and give in the Kit part No.

* We never tested them on the M17x-R3 so we cannot know if they will work.
* These were only validated on the M17x-R4 and M18x-R2 so we cannot know if they will work on the M17x-R3:

* I can find no reference to us using the AMD Radeon HD8970m on any Alienware?

Hi Chris
I know it has been awhile but I finally saved some money for an upgrade, I spoke to the sales department to order an new card but they could not help me, I would prefer to get the new card from Dell over amazon or eBay, is there any one at Dell who might know who I should speak/contact about this?

never-mind I managed to get hole of alien ware technical and they gave me some sound advice, managed to source the 6990m :)
