Replacing GTX 760ti with GTX 970 in a Alienware X51 R2?

Just did a little research and from what I can tell the reference GTX 970 and 760ti share the same exact dimensions in length and depth; and uses less power in idle and under load; and it gives off less heat.

Does anyone know if there would be any complications with replacing my GTX 760ti with a GTX 970?

i think you are safer off with GTX960

To be honest I have EVGA GTX970 and I'm a bit worried that the 330W PSU will not be enough once I switch over to DX12 gaming loads, power testing has shown that DX12 benchmarks tend to max out the GPU more consistently over time than DX11 and this increase in power consumption will really test the durability of the PSU.

I know my GTX970 has been running perfectly stable for several months, but most of the time the overall system power consumption  ranges at 150-220W...moving to DX12 I would expect it be closer to 300W a lot more often and that is concerning.

Hi there,

So I also want to put an EVGA gtx 970 into my x 51 r2. The new alienware x51 r2s, even with the 330watt powersupply, are being bundled with gtx 960s. These require a minimum of 400w, yet alienware themselves are comfortable with selling them with the new x51s. So I think a 970 should be running ok if you have the 330w psu. I have read a lot of testimony that the x51 r2s can handle the 970s and even 980s, but I don't want to risk getting a 980. So I guess I'm torn between the 960 and 970

Wow!  Awesome stuff!

Thanks for the quick reply.  :D

For anyone wondering he is using the EVGA GTX 970 SC Reference card.

A user has posted videos on YouTube of an X51 running with a GTX 970. The preliminary results are exciting. We X51 owners might finally have a top notch video card upgrade.

I checked whether the stock nvidia reference gtx970 would fit and it will not since it is 10.5 inches in length and the X51 r2 supports only 9.5 inch cards...

Any graphic card up to 10" long can fit, if longer then you need to remove the fan which is at the corner of the case and prevents the longer graphic cards to fit, you can replace that fan with a thinner one maybe a 10mm, you can install a GPU up to 11 inches!

The card mentioned below is apparently only 9.5 inches long and it's the same one used by the person who uploaded the video I had posted earlier.

If it's 9.5 inches then there should be no problem, it can fit!

SO you are saying it is not worth the upgrade?

I can get a GTX 970 for only $305 to replave my 760 in my x51 but now I am not sure. My main reason is for Project Cars.

Will I need to upgrade my 330 power as well?

This is for AlienX51-R2 owners ONLY if dont have 330W supply you may have a R-1 and complete different

set of problems. For R-2 owners, i've been playin with 970 for few weeks, it is stable and able for Overclock , running +110 Clocksapr20th2.jpg

Thanks for all the posts!!

PNY got back with me and said DO NOT use the PNY GTX 970 with a 330 supply but I figure they are just doing their jobs and covering their a..

Still contemplating the PNY 970 VCGGTX9704XPB that was told would fit perfect v.s. the EVGA 970 04G-P4-1970-KR that I was told by an x51 R2 owner would get hot if I was not careful

So with hard gaming for 4-5 hours I have little risk of overheating with the 330 supply?

Any alternatives to better cooling in the x51 R2 case?
