Right Side Light

Hello, I have an Alienware Area 51 ALX. It is powered up 24/7. I just happen to notice that when I use the color blue (2nd blue color from darkest blue) my right lower side is more green than the other zones. I assume one of the LEDs used to mix this color is in need of replacement. It may have been this way for some time, but that side faces away from my direct view when I'm at my desk. I went thru the tester and everything looks good and all match (Red/blue/Green) except the white on that same side has a yellowish tint. Which confirms why my blue looks more green.....(blue and to much yellow will make green, primary colors..... I am looking for the part # for the lower right side LED strip side so I can order/find one so I can replace it. Thanks.

Hi!

Below is the part# and description of the part you need to replace. We no longer have these parts in stock for sale, but you can check Ztronics and other online stores for available parts.

the answer is no, led strips not serviceable, the whole side must be replaced.

Copy/paste this link to official A-51 service manual, adobe pdf doc, to replace side panel(s), p16-18:

If in USA, Newport Computers, $20 (+ship/handle):

for anyone's attention, the factory mislabeled a bunch of p687r panels as "p688r", then Dell sold these off to online surplus parts vendors, these surplus part vendors now have these mislabeled p687r panels, so when you order p688r from them, they ship you the mthrbrd side panel instead . You have to email the vendor a pic like this one, ask for visual confirmation before you buy p688r from anyone but Dell Parts.

Greetings Naomi, Thanks for your response. I did a quick search and plenty of them came up for sale from about $70 - $130 (new). final question....I figure since you gave me the part number for the whole assembly I guess just the LED strip alone is not available.....Is the LED strip the same as the LEDs in the upper vents? thanks again.

The right (hard drive bay side) side is trickier than the mthrbrd access side to remove/replace. I recently helped a member with the hard drive bay side here:

 http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19564754.aspx

do be careful: the front panel tab, if improperly handled, can "crack" the accepting clip on the front "grille" - a lesson I learned the hard way when replacing mine.

thanks Cass-Ole' and Naomi. I think I'll pick up some spare parts on that site for now and future use.

hello Rick.

if you ordered x497r, cancel your order. I see here you have an ALX.

x497r is for the base Area-51

You need part# p687r

I gave you the Newport link, because Naomi said you needed 497 ... I speed read your opening statements, got the gist you wanted just the led strip, saw you found for $70-100, then tossed you the link. I did not realize til today you are an ALX owner. The paint job is different on 497 then it is on 687. Try eBay for p687r, p688r is the other side panel, (p685r/p686r are the door panels, x504r is the front bezel)

Alright Rick, let's get you squared away once & for all.

One way or another, you need a new led strip. The led strip is not removeable, but, the lens it is attached to is removeable:

So, if you ordered 497, in a worst case scenario where it is shiny but you needed a matte panel, go ahead & transfer the lens onto your current panel after it gets there, by undoing the few screws on back.

The led/lens assemblies are rarely if never sold, that is why I called it "not serviceable", but, yes, so long as you buy the correct side, you can transfer the led/lens assembly onto your current panel. In other words, if you can not track down p687r, buy 497, transfer lens etc. I hope this clears this up for you. I apologize for any oversight, it was approaching my bed-time when I answered your post ... now I'm doing damage control

I'm sorry, some people think they have an ALX when they don't. Not that you need it, but here is a thread I was part of to id your case ... if your paint job is "shiny" then buy 497 ... if it is a softer matte then buy 687 ...

you may have to use bing/google to source p687r, or call Dell/Alienware, see if in stock. When you buy from Dell/Alienware, remember to "talk them down" a little; a $100 part can usually be talked down to 80 or so :)

their photo is right, but their description calls it a left lower when you need a right lower. Email them, ask do they have by visual confirmation the one in the photo & ask for an exchange; for 80 a piece you should get free return shipping I'd say. Dell had them at like 100-115, 80 is close enough to that, plus you can talk dell down to like 80-90 and get the right part from them, new if they're in stock

www.tcdigital.com gave me a quote 2 months ago at $50 (US) for p688r, in stock. You can email this guy a photo and see if they have it, or just have mislabeled p687r's! See if they ship outside US also, see what the ship cost is etc. They're Twin Cities, Minnesota I guess.
