Upgrading X51 to GTX 660

Hello,

I recently bought the AX51 model # ax51-6156.

I want to upgrade to the GTX 660 but I don't know if I have the right power supply with my system. I can't tell what voltage it runs at.

The other important questions is:

There are about one bazillion different GTX660 cards out there. All by different manufacturers. Is there any one GTX 660 recommended? Does it matter which one I Get? Are they all the same more or less?

Go with a model based on Nvidia reference.  That means air is sucked from inside the chassis with hot air ejected out the back of the system.  This is referred to as a blower type cooler with a single fan .  Special model 660's with dual fans that blast air down onto the GPU are not advisable as they just flood the chassis with hot air instead of evacuating the hot air from the case.

stick to 2GB.  more ram = more power.  Look for one fan and an enclosed cooling system with a grill on the back of the card around the ports where hot air is exhausted...

for example this is a reference card note the ram and clock speeds.  I'm not saying buy this card specifically, shop around, just calling it out as an example of a reference design.

Hi exodeath,

A minimum of 450W power supply should be used for a GTX 660 card.  You may want to buy a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 card for which you may refer the below link:

Does dell even sell a power supply of that caliber? Other ax51s seem to carry the 660 but I can't seem to find a power supply of 450w for my ax51

The AX51 uses an EXTERNAL power supply. Unless I am mistaken, this internal power supply, or any of them, will not work.

Hi exodeath,

You may use any 450W PSU available in the market. Dell does not have 450W PSU available as of now.

The below link might help you in going for a 450W PSU:

He means the 330W power brick.  The Alienware X51 does not have a 450w psu it is a small form factor system that uses external  ac adapters.  The easy way to tell what brick you have it to see if it has a smooth outer surface or "ridges".  If you see ridges that is a 330W  brick.  No ridges?  You have either a 240w brick or a 180w. You can get a 330W brick at either  dell.com/parts or ebay then you will be ready for a GTX660.

Recommend you get a stock  GTX660 and not an over clocked version or any FTW version.

Yeah, I have the 240w one, just ordered a 330 W one. Does anyone have a particular GTX 660, non-OEM model they ordered and installed that worked well with their system?

So I'm looking for something with ONE fan correct? That's how I can tell if it's the "air out the back" kind? Does the amount of VRAM on the card itself affect anything? Should I get something with more vram onboard or should I stick to 2GB or whatever?

Thanks a lot for the help btw.
