X51-R1 i3-2120 RAM/SSD upgrade options, BIOS revision in regards, and motherboard with slots available.
Hello All!
Fellow Alienz owners, I have recently acquired an X51-R1 with i3-2120, 2x2GB Kingston 1333, Barracuda 7200.12 1TB HDD, GT545 1GB, etc... that came with it on original release. No upgrades yet. I need to upgrade the physical memory (I'm thinking 16GB, but 8 may do) and I don't know who you all trust for stability or that you have experience with on the same rig. Also, I read somewhere that after BIOS Rev A03 the system supports 1600MHz clock speed? Is this still the case? I'm updated to A14 (which I believe is the latest).
Also, any ideas what exact board is used inside? I'm trying to get an idea for upgrade space and open slots, and I don't want to open the case a lot. I opened once when I first got it, and it's pretty tightly (but neatly) packed in there.
Lastly, SSDs! I already have one picked out (the Samsung 850EVO 250GB, SATA III 6GB/s) but I believe the interface is mSATA? Any advice on how to have both drives in operation simultaneously? I have seen quite a few people have done it with a SATA splitter cable, and they were able to double boot C:/D: from the SSD and HDD simultaneously, but I didn't know if anybody here has tried that?
I guess I'm just nervous to try to supersede with Alienware has done since this thing is wicked stable. Props to Alienware on this setup, it is the little performance PC that can and WILL!

Since you have the latest BIOS version, you should be able to upgrade to an Ivy Bridge CPU. An i5-3330 (or almost any Ivy Bridge i5) or i7-3770 should be worthy upgrades. The RAM can also run at 1600 MHz with 16 GB being the max capacity (2 x 8).
The motherboard is OEM. It's a Mini-ITX. As it is the X51, you are very limited in space, but the upgrades will fit. 3 SATA ports, 1 PCI-E x16 slot, 2 RAM slots, a Mini PCI-E slot for the Wifi card, and that's really it for noteworthy things.
The 850 EVO does come in a 2.5" form factor, so unless you got a mSATA one, you should be fine. You'll need additional cables if you want to keep your HDD. Adding an SSD to the X51 R1 is a common upgrade.
I would also get the external 330w PSU in the case you want to upgrade your GPU. A GTX 1060 works from reports I've seen.

I upgrade these 2 weeks ago... 16GB of Gskill DDR3 2440mhz ram Samsung Evo250GB SSD and a GTX 750 Ti oc
I do have the 330watt psu
Works Great.
Looking at getting a GTX 1060 in few mths....they are only 120watt to run.( can go up to 150Watt with 330watt psu for video cards on the X51.
