X51-R2, Replacing GTX 760Ti to GTX 970?

Hi, i'm thinking to upgrade my graphic card from GTX 760Ti to GTX 970, i know that GTX 970 is a very power efficient GPU, it required 145-160W, so anyone knows whether this graphic card is compatible with Alienware X51-R2? Any issue?

I am running GTX970 in X51 R2 with 330W P/S. Installation took 5 minutes max and all is working as advertised. Very quiet too !!

Hello Sole4iman!

We validated up to the GTX 760ti on the X51 R2 so we cannot assure you that the GTX 970 will work properly.

If you decide to do it I will buy your 760 Ti graphics card. I'm trying to upgrade from the 745 and not sure what I can upgrade to as the 760 Ti doesn't seem to be for sale by Dell or aftermarket.

According to guru3D, the subjective obtained GPU power consumption = 164w. You cannot use any video card that uses more than 150w.

I would disagree with that statement

The GTX 970 is even more efficient than a GTX 760ti (Which is rebranded GTX 670 btw)

The GTX 970 stock uses 145W

The GTX 760ti (AKA GTX 670) uses 170W

As long as you have the 330W power adapter you should be fine.  (You might even be OK with a 240W power adapter)

Also be sure that you pick a card with a blower cooler due to the shape of the case of the x51 r2 and with a length of maximum 9.5 inches.

I put an EVGA GTX 970 in my X51 R2 last weekend. Model: 04G-P4-1970. I have the 330W PSU. Didn't have to remove anything. Wasn't hard to fit in. Just be aware of the routing of the videocard's power cable when inserting the card back into the X51. Everything appears to work fine at the moment.

It is noisier than the original GTX 645 it came with and the EVGA GTX 750 ti SC I later upgraded to. The X51 is currently positioned on the desk in front of me under the shelf the monitor sits on. I do find the noisier card obtrusive and will be moving the X51 probably to under the desk when I find something to sit it on. But you do need a blower style fan on the X51 with the more powerful hotter running cards.

Would not go for an overclocked card as it'll draw more than the 145W nvidia state and possibly push the 330W PSU too much causing shutdowns.

For the benefit of anyone who is unsure.

There are some major differences in the dimensions of GTX970 cards.

Some cards will fit inside the x51 case with no problem, but many won't! As a general rule, everything from EVGA should work.

Also note that many designs require 8 pin PSU connectors which is problematic since the ones on x51 comes with 6 pins.
