X51 bad motherboard
My son's Alienware X51 started emitting 3 beeps on power-up several months ago. He had a technician come out and it was diagnosed as a bad motherboard. Unfortunately, his warranty had just run out. I would like to know how I can find out which motherboard is installed in the system so I can order a new one. Last time he checked, Dell was unable to help him because they had none in stock.

X51 r1 or r2 ? i know my X51 R1 has a MSI mainboard if you take it out there are numbers on it and you can get the brand and number off the tags and look it up.

not sure why you listed the operating system by them as according to this article http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=625364&dgc=SM&cid=249387&lid=4966705 all the x51 support windows 8 and 8.1 update without issues.

OK, I opened it up and found the board number:
6G6JW Alienware X51 Intel H61 DELL MotherBoard LGA 1155 DDR3
There are a few refurbished ones available on ebay. Looks like it will be a pain to replace. Almost as bad as a laptop.

its pretty simple just make sure to ground yourself. get yourself on the antistatic wrist bands so that way you don't shock the power board and the new mainboard. skip to 3:20 seconds on the video it gets to the point of removing the mainboard.

not at all very simple i think there are only 4 screws. the the cable that hooks the power board to the mainboard, pull it off as one unit. unhook and take note of the routing of the other cables fan and sata cables. and thats pretty much it. so remove screws, unhook the cable and power cable from the power board. unhook a few cables pull out. remove heatsink and fan after its out of the case. if you want to try and reuse the chip and ram you can. To remove the power cable it a ribbon cable that goes between the power board and mainboard push on the clamp holder remove from power board first, then remove from mainboard. from there its a just a few cables and screws.

The video was very helpful. I waited until vacations were over to order a new motherboard. It arrived yesterday and I installed it this evening.
Now I get the BIOS screen with the F2 and F12 prompts. Nothing happens after. My selection is highlighted and then it just sits there. If I choose nothing, finally it displays an underscore on the screen and nothing else after. Any ideas what could cause that? I checked and it appears the hard drive is connected properly.

I'm in the UK but I can't find anywhere where I can buy a new R2 mother board.
Any ideas?
