Aurora R5 m2 Samung 950 Pro SSD Support

Hello Everyone,

Put in a 950 Pro 512GB in to replace the stock Toshiba 256GB  into my Aurora R5 box last night, (i7 6700K w/1070 config), and the board didn't detect it.  Updated BIOS to v1.09, still nothing.

I've read previous posts saying that  BIOS v1.07 does allow 950 Support, but reading further there is no confirmation from Alienware on this.

Does anyone have any information or experience on support for the 950 Pro in these boxes?

Appreciate any info anyone has on it!

Has anyone tried installing a New Samsung 960 Pro 512Gb M.2 NVME SSD on the new Aurora R6?

my system:

Alienware Aurora-R6 ~ Intel i7-7700 ~ 16gb ram Air Cooled

NVIDIA GTX-1060 6gb ~ WD 1 TB 7200 SATA,  450W   I just bought one and am trying to make sure they are compatible?  I know that the EVO series are not compatible.

I installed the 960 Pro 512GB m.2 ssd into my aurora r6.  the bios doesnt allow you to choose the ssd to boot even after i did a clean install of windows 10 with a usb.  after you finish installing windows & reboot, then it still doesnt allow to boot off the SSD.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I spent 2 hours on the phone with Alienware Tech support, and they didnt know what to do??????

I did everything.  Its giving a boot failure issue.  After successful clean of ssd with the reflect software using dos mode.  I rebooted w/o sata hd plugged in.  It will not boot so I can install the clean windows version with the windows usb drive.  my settings are currently: ACHI, Boot secure Mode On, UEFI mode.  everytime I have to select the boot option #1 to Windows boot manager otherwise it fails trying to load off of IVe4 or 6.  now when I plug my sata drive back & load up windows off sata drive it doesnt show the SSD anywhere on the pc.  Before i did this it was reading the SSD?

It reads the ssd in the m.2 slot in the bios screen.  But even if I put in raid mode,  it will let me boot up to install windows but there is no ssd available to load onto.  What do you recommend I do now?

After successful clean of ssd with the reflect software using dos mode.

So, M.2 SSD is working (hardware wise) because DiskPart can see and clean/erase the drive.

1. It will not boot so I can install the clean windows version with the windows usb drive.

2. my settings are currently: ACHI, Boot secure Mode On, UEFI mode.

1. F12 at Boot/BIOS-Post should allow a one-time boot of Windows-10 USB Flash drive

2. Hmm, try Raid-on instead of AHCI. That should make it like exactly like mine.

Also ... not sure what this means ... maybe it's a new level of UEFI, but ...

The only way I see to switch machine from UEFI to Legacy is from F12. I don't see a way to change it from normal BIOS screen. Is displays it's current mode in BIOS, but it's not modify-able.

Storage Controllers and Hardware that DOES NOT HAVE a certificate in Bios will require CSM ON and SECURE BOOT OFF to be seen.  This is a restriction of UEFI Class 2.3.1 and higher.

You must be clear that UEFI BIOS CSM "seeing" is not the same as WINDOWS F6 MASS STORAGE DRIVER SIGNED WHQL "seeing"

Neither Driver NOR hardware will be "SEEN" in secure boot mode without certificate from Microsoft in the SECURE BOOT UEFI ELAM.

F6 Mass Storage Drivers ARE REQUIRED for windows 7 or 8 or 10 to

SEE NVME Drives.

NVME Drivers ARE NOT NATIVE TO WINDOWS 7 or 8 or 10.

Thanks SpeedStep, that's some excellent info.

So, if I'm understanding this right, we need a "pre-OS" driver. I think it used to be called an "F6 Floppy" driver (because you typically loaded it with a floppy at OS install time). Of course now, we use flash-drives.

Those Intel drivers you linked to appear to be specific to Intel-SSDs. Sounds like you are saying the driver needed is specific to the SSD used and not the controller on motherboard. In TigerTim53's case ... Samsung SSD not Intel Chipset/Controller.

Should he try the Samsung NVMe v2.1 Driver from this page?

today:

1. Aurora R6 still works great with SATA hd.

2. Unplug p9 connector to SATA hd  Got another Brand New Samsung 960 512gb NVME m.2 SSD delivered.  Installed 960 Pro into M.2 slot.  Change the following bios settings:

AHCI, Secure Boot On, UEFI.  in F12 menu boot from USB (new Windows 10) drive.

3. m.2 slot shows the 960 Pro in bios.

4. successful boot from USB drive.  Select new Unallocated, unpartioned, clean new 960 Pro m.2 512Gb SSD in windows.  Windows successfully loads up completely.  reboots, then after attempting all possible configurations that have talked about in this thread.  All configurations result in a boot failure on device.

5.  reconnect Sata P9 plug into system. Aurora R6 still loads up correctly off SATA boot with M.2 960 Pro still installed with original SATA settings.

6. 960 Pro 512gb in disk management is recognized as primary partition NTFS set up automatically by windows 10 install

SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BY TESLA 1856 AND OR SPEEDSTEP.

 TigerTim

Have you had any luck with your m.2 SSD? I'm having the same problem too. In bios the SSD shows but next to it , it says 0Mb and its a 500 mb SSD.

I tried to help TigerTim via PrivateMessage thread, but I don't think he ever got it going completely. He said Windows-10/64 installs, but it won't boot when finished.

I posted other (reported-ly working) full example procedures here. I feel the answer is there somewhere:
