Gaming problems: AW 17 R2 & graphics amplifier

Hello,

I have a Alienware 17 R2.

BIOS: A04
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4980HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 12

EXT Display Card: NVIDIA GEForce GTX 980
Display Memory: 12195 MB

INT Display Card: NVIDIA GEForce GTX 980m
Display Memory: 12198 MB

INT Dislay Card: Intel(R) Iris(TM) Pro Graphics 5200
Display Memory: 2160 MB

I also have a grpahics amplifier to connect the NVIDIA GEForce GTX 980 to the computer.

I have everything for over a year and a half now.  While gaming a I have the amplifier with the NVIDIA GEForce GTX 980 card connected.

The week before Christmas the problems started.  In the middle to gaming the computer would freeze then the game would crash.  A windiow error message would say DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED.

The game would not reopen or relaunch.  A full boot would be needed.  Initially I might get an hour of gaming before crash.  However over the last month this has been reduced to 20 minutes at best.  This problem is happening for all games.

I have tried the following tasks, (NONE of which work)
- turned on vsync
- performed a clean boot before attemting to play the game
- ensured I have power supply capable of meeting the demands of your hardware while it is under heavy gaming load
- performed a clean video driver installation
- tried NVIDIA driver previous to current
- set all in game graphics settings to low in order to reduce the stress on the GPU
- ensured i have hard drive space available for the pagefile
- set the high performance preset in the GPU control panel, as opposed to the high quality preset
- set Windows power settings to High performance in the Power Options in Control Panel.
- beside High performance, click on Change plan settings, Change advanced power settings, in PCI Express and Link State Power Management change the Setting to Off.
- run the dxwebsetup to possibly fix corrupted DirectX files
- changed the advanced power options so that the hard disk never turns off

I have noticed two things:
1) while the graphics amplifier and the  GTX 980 card are connected I have disabled the internal Intel graphics card. When attemptting to load the game it says there is no suitable card connected, even though the GTX 980 card is connected.
2)I have tried playing the game without the graphics amplifier & the GTX980, by using the internal GTX980m.  The game works but crashes due to overheat after 3 hours (which is to be expected, heat being the reason for the external amplifier) however this indicates that the drivers are working fine.

I had this game and this computer setup for more than a year and half wihtout any issues.

Is this a sign that the External GTX980 is failing?

i've been lurking in this thread and actually didn't want to reply because i don't know alot about G-Amps. but you guys kinda running in acircle at this point. if Alienware-Eimy tells you not to install Desktop driver, why do you keep installing it? alright. sorry.

try to find out what happens. open the start menu and type in "reliability history". open it. you should see a bunch of errors. tell us what they say.

second info source is Event Viewer.

How to use Windows 10 Event Viewer - Windows 10 - Tom's Hardware

you should see alot of errors there too. they could also help to find out whats going on.

Hi Carbon,

Thanks and that's right, I asked for the driver to check which one Lambay is using at this time since it should be just the laptop one.

Not sure event viewer will tell us much, let's see if reliability history has more to say.

Current driver installed in the notebook driver only.

Alienware Commander software is able to measure the temp.  I don't have it in front of me now but I remember it was a constant temp, no up spikes, of around 60c. Again that's from memory, I will have to check later. But it definitely didn't increase much.

maybe you are right. maybe there is nothing to see. but at this point it's better then nothing.

too bad he has no other card to test. i would borrow him one but we are not even on the same continent.

Take your time, I do want to bring up that in my experience gaming and having burned a few Graphics Cards the past, that does sound like a symptom of hardware issues, however, I'll try and make a bit of research on the specific issue to see if anyone else has had similar experience.

First of all thanks for the help.

I spent the last few days wiping the computer and reinstalling Win 10.  All went well with the reinstallation.

I updated all the drivers.  Currently the notebook driver is the only one installed.

Tried gaming again tonight and unfortunately it crashes again.

You can see the NVIDIA GPU usage and mem load graph the drop where the GPU just stops operating.

yeah, your GA Card is causing the drivers to halt. am afraid the card may be faulty. The other files may have received a DLL error due to the sudden interruption of the processes from the crash, so makes sense some windows errors would occur.

Unfortunately it is still not 100% accurate as there is very little chance it may also be the GA causing the graphics to crash if faulty. It is not that common, but I honestly do not use a GA myself, I can't say with certainty.

Would recommend testing another card my 2 cents

sorry. can't you order another card from Amazon for example and return it if the problem persists?
or go to a local computer store with your laptop / AGA and ask them nicely to test a different card.
