Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

I have to agree that I'm finding the AGA simply not worth the effort. My laptop hasn't been used for a couple of months, and I turned it on yesterday. Updated everything (Windows, Nvidia drivers, Alienware updates including BIOS).

Now, when the AGA is connected, it is detected but the graphics card is not. Everything runs using the integrated graphics. It was all working fine before I updated everything.

I've tried reinstalling the graphics driver and the BIOS but nothing is working. Admittedly, I've changed the internal fan and PSU in the AGA (to an Antec 600W). But as I said, it was working fine before updating. The graphics card is getting power as the LEDs are coming on and the fans are working, it's just not being seen by the system.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

I am afraid that both of us have the same problem. Our GPU is not compatible with the AGA.

As you can see the 2070 Super is not supported by AGA, furthermore, even if it was supported some OEM change the bios making them incompatible with AGA.

It supports all GPUs from the 900 series to the 2080Ti. The super is a higher clocked version of the 2070 with a bit more performance closer to a 2080 max q.

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

Thank you very much for your comment and all of your support ;).

Well, 2060 is not on the compatible list albeit I won't say that this is simply an oversight of Alienware. Latest Radeon GPU are not supported.

Now I have changed my XT5600 for RX2060, technically it works, but it doesn't fit well to the AGA. Note that you cant find anywhere which it's the size of supported cards.

Also they claim that some modifications on the BIOS made by the manufacturer may make the GPU not compatible with the AGA.

And still not happy AT ALL due to sound issues for both cards. And for lack of "official support".

But it even says that it can handle the Radeon RX5700 XT fine?

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

Thanks for your reply.

Other user has mentioned that there may be issues when people that have a Nvidia GPU upgrade their system with an AMD GPU. This is not mentioned by Alienware anywhere - which they should had -.

But at least for me, the 5600XT did not work.

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

@kondenado  You say, "Note that you cant find anywhere which it's the size of supported cards."  The AGA product page here says "...with support for full-length, double-wide, PCI-Express x16 graphics cards."  Full-length and double-wide are industry standard definitions for expansion cards.

As for you saying, "Also they claim that some modifications on the BIOS made by the manufacturer may make the GPU not compatible with the AGA."  Who is "they" in that sentence?

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

@kondenado  Ok, but if some retail card includes a modified VBIOS that prevents it from working in the AGA, is that really the AGA's fault?  Hard to say without knowing more details about the reason for the modification.  And technically that could even apply to certain variations of GPUs that are listed as compatible, which is why that note exists.  That note means that Dell can't promise that every GeForce RTX 2080 Ti will work, for example.

Also, that old February 2019 post you keep citing actually indicates the size of cards it supports.  Right above the GPU compatibility table -- and right near that VBIOS note -- the post says, "The AGA can support video cards of up to 375w, dual slot, 10.5"."  So Dell definitely does provide that information, in multiple locations.

Re: 15 R2, AGA, upgrade to RTX 2070 Super?

Thank for your comment.

Yes, I do agree that modification on the VRAM that <Profanity removed> the compatibility with the AGA is not Alienware fault. But you need to say it very clearly. Otherwise you will be misleading people and people will buy non compatible GPUs.

They say "The AGA can support video cards of up to 375w, dual slot, 10.5"."

Radeon 5600XT fulfills those requirements and its not compatible. The issue with the 5600XT is not the length, is the width (and its for few mm). So while fulfilling what Alienware says, they are not really compatible and thats on Alienware.
