Area-51m R2, Steam games crash

I have an AW Area 51-M R2 with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super.  I have tried running 2 Steam games, Rimworld and The Infected, both have the same problem, after some time (anything from 10 to 30 minutes) the game stops, the screen goes black and eventually the game crashes out, in Rimworld I see a message that it has stopped responding, in The Infected I see nothing.  The Infected is not running any mods, Rimworld has a couple.

I'm running a temperature monitor so I know it's not overheating.

The laptop is only a couple of months old.

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong here?

Hi @IanB2  thank you for sharing update.

(1) Critical Event: A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX XXXX Mobile is not working correctly. Hopefully it is just incorrect drivers, open NVIDIA Driver Downloads and open its Help link in a new window. Please take time to identify and enable the correct drivers for your NVIDIA product.

(2) Critical Event: UnityPlayer.dll caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005) Crash. This usually happens when anti-virus prevents launch of the game, please create an exception.

(3) Critical Event: Intel(R) Dynamic Tuning Utility Application. Please download and run Intel Driver & Support Assistant to Identify your products and get driver and software updates.

Please click on Kudos to say thank you for response from user that is not employed by Dell. Please share an update on progress, so that other users derive benefit from your experience. Thank you.

Just wondering, do you have Rivatuner installed? Also run diagnostics (F12 immediately at boot) and watch for any RAM errors.

Uninstall both games and save your data for them. Then reinstall steam and the games and see if that works.

Also what are your temps though? And are your Graphic settings too high? Like if your game requires 11Gb of Memory but your GPU has only 8 and the settings need 11Gb whats gonna happen? Its probably going to crash.

Also make sure to update all your drivers and get GeForce NOW as that is good for game optimizations.

That's basically what the Alienware support people suggested.  I've since removed all Steam games, then Steam, reinstalled Steam and Rimworld. Everything seemed fine the next day although only played a couple of hours.  Today I messaged support and said they could archive the call, within 30 minutes it did it again, Rimworld black screen and message it had stopped responding.  I've played Rimworld for years on various PC's, never had a single issue with it until I got this laptop.

Messaged support again and now they are suggesting I should reinstall Windows followed by all my folders etc.  Now call me old fashioned but this laptop is only 2 months old, I've already had 2 faults on it, with a new purchase I expect a reasonable amount of trouble-free use.  I spent most of the first weeks downloading Windows updates, drivers, various software and I've only just got it up-to-date, the thought of starting all that again is enough to make me cry, tbh I'm getting to the stage of scrapping this garbage PC and getting away from Dell forever.

Hi @IanB2  please run Reliability Monitor and wait for it to load timeline of Events. The root cause of stream games crash will be in the Critical Event created when the crash occurred. Open this event, in bottom of this event window, there is the save to memory option, so that you can paste this information into your next post.

Hi Crimson, thanks for your reply.

I hadn't heard of the reliability monitor before but I've now checked it out.

First a problem.  At the bottom of the RM screen is an option to "Save reliability history".  I have twice tried clicking that, each time it opens an output file, then sits there using about 5% cpu but never ends, Task Manager shows Windows Explorer (the RM I assume) as Not Responding.  After about 10 minutes I restart the laptop but nothing has been written to the file.

There are 2 critical events shown at the time Rimworld failed this morning.  First it shows a Windows "Hardware error", double-click on that event shows....

I was not aware of a fault at that time, certainly nothing was obvious or even visible.

I would very much appreciate an insight into these issues, the likely causes, and what I should do next.

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi Crimson,

(1) I checked the RTX driver via the link you provided, it showed a newer one available even though I have been using GeForce Experience to check. So I then checked again with GeForce Experience and it too showed the same driver as available so I told GeFE to install it.  The driver downloaded fine but about half-way thru the install it locked up, the GeFE window was black, I couldn't switch apps, even Ctl/Alt/Del did nothing, I waited 30 minutes then had to reluctantly restart, it all came up Ok so I went back into GeFE and told it to reinstall that driver which it did, this time without problem.

(2)  I don't quite follow this one.  I don't see how the AntiVirus could have done that as I had actually been playing over an hour when it failed, it didn't happen when I was launching.  I don't understand what your "please create an exception." means?

(3) I'm in the process of downloading the Intel Driver & Support Assistant, I'll get back on that.

Regards

Ian

Hi 2 Bronze, thank you for sharing update.

Did you install the correct drivers for your discrete NVIDIA GPU or just update the NVIDIA application version?

My laptop has an RTX 2080 Super so I selected and installed what seemed to me to be the driver for that device...

Is this right?

Not sure I follow.  The driver (as I understand it) is in no way related to what you're using it for, there's no different driver for Steam, there's only one driver specific to the Graphics Card in use.  I have only downloaded and installed that driver, I haven't made any changes/setup for Steam as I don't think there are any.  When I asked if it was correct I was simply trying to answer your question "Did you install the correct drivers for your discrete NVIDIA GPU or just update the NVIDIA application version? ".

Hi 2 Bronze, thank you for sharing update. This forum is not Dell Support. Perhaps someone with your Area-51m R2 system configuration and plays Steam games, will provide clarification that your driver setup is valid?
