PCI-e 3.0 x4 for ampere 3080/3090 question
First of all, I found an article where someone tested the 2080ti on different PCIe lane settings to see what the performance drop was for the 2080ti using x4 over x16, and overall it showed an average of around 5% drop, up to 10% for a few games. This is reasonable.
Can we expect the same for ampere cards, or will they be so bottlenecked on a x4 that the drop will be exponential?
I'm considering buying a 3080 or 3090 for my alienware graphics amplifier (fitting it wont be an issue for me and my aga has a 750 watt power supply), and maybe later down the line in half a year or a year buy a desktop around the videocard.
I'm currently using the 51m R1 9900k 2080 (I also have a 4k 144hz display that can use all the graphic power it I can throw at it), will I see a massive performance increase using a 3080 or 3090 in my aga or should I just save some money and buy a complete desktop system, because who knows by that time 4080 might be out and its not worth aga'ing an ampere card at the moment?

All...I downloaded a new bios upgrade today and after installing, my rtx 3090 now works with my aga and the led light is on. No more swapping tricks with the cable. Able to restart, put in sleep mode and external display with aga comes back on with no problems.

Until these cards reach the hands of end users, any answer you receive is speculation.
Even the ones in the hands of early reviewers are pre-production prototypes at this point, which may or may not reflect the hardware that will ship for sale through end user channels.

It’s going to work as some website said nividia confirmed that it would still work fine with 3.0 as long as it’s x16 but I don’t know about x4.
I’d still use the RTX 2080 in the area51m for now as it’s still powerful and I’d wait until Dell updates the graphics amp to x16 gen 4.0

Thanks, I'll keep an eye to see if anyone benchmarks 30 series on different PCIe 3.0 set ups, but I had a good think about it and I'll probably wait until I've got enough for a full desktop system.

I have an Area51m 9900k, 2080, and AGA with a 600w PSU. I received my PNY RTX 3080 from Dell today and cannot get it to work with my internal display or HDMI out to a monitor. I have the most recent 456.55 Game ready driver from Nvidia and the latest updates for Win10 Pro. The card is recognized in Bios and in Device manager. Device manager states: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot locate the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API. I’ve searched high and low and can’t find anything that helps.

Try turn it on with the AGA connected, when the Alien Logo show up, turn it off by pressing the power button and then turn it on immediately.
Let me know!

Thanks for the reply. I’m up for anything at this point. Just wondering if it will matter If I’m on laptop display or external monitor for this to possibly work?

It didn’t work internal or external. Thanks for trying though.

I’m having the exact same problem. Did you find any solution? Have you tried to do a clean installation of the driver? My 3080 is EVGA and I contacted their support they told me to do a clean driver install. I haven’t tried yet.

I had a similar issue when I got my EVGA 2080 Super, I found a program called Driver Easy, and it was able to find all the right drivers for me.

I have not found a solution for Alienware graphics amplifier yet. Myself and a few others on reddit Have tried a clean install of windows with fresh NV driver install and DDU in safe mode then fresh NV Install with no luck. I managed to rule out complete Dell BIOS incompatibility by using a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosure which worked right away with my Dell bought PNY RTX 3080 plugged into my Area51m R1. Another member of the Alienware Reddit group purchased a 1on1 Dell tech support session which failed to find a solution but the tech agent did reassure that his supervisor was aware of the problem which provides at least some degree of hope to reaching a solution eventually.

Hey guys I just wanted to add fuel to the fire on this. I have an AGA, with a RTX 3080 Founders Edition from nvidia. Same issue. It showed as a microsoft display adapter, I manually forced the drivers to read the 3080 and it still says insufficient system resources exist to complete the API. I'm considering trying a new power supply, but I don't think power is the issue.. 460w should be enough for 1 gpu.
I have a 2020 m17 R3. I've reinstalled drivers, and what tends to happen is that for a BRIEF moment I will get a picture on my second monitor before the driver fails. I think PCIe x4 is just not enough. I know it works in PCIe 3 x8, because thats what my desktop has left for it, but x4 probably just can't do it.

It’s not a power issue. I have a 600w psu in my AGA. And I don’t think it’s a pcie x4 bandwidth issue because my 3080 works with a TB3 eGPU enclosure which is pcie x4 as well but has even less bandwidth due to sharing pcie lanes with storage and USB I/O. This same thing happened with the release of GTX 10xx and RTX 20xx. Those cards eventually became compatible once Dell updated firmware to do so. Unfortunately there is no telling when they will get around to it as it’s been different every generation.

Have you found a solution yet?
It's definitely a software/driver issue. It should not be a bandwidth issue. Especially with no load on the card when you're just firing it up. There is no way it saturating the bandwidth. Also, people have been getting this to work with other thunderbolt enclosures which have less bandwidth. I doubt it's a power supply issue also although the thought had occurred to me to upgrade the PSU in the AGA. I'll go as far as modifying the board if I have to.
It's going to be a few months before I can get my hands on an RTX 3080 founders edition with the supply shortages, but I'm really hoping the AGA will work as a solution to home 4k gaming over my 2080 super. Please continue to work on this and post an update if you get it working.
Also, how does the card do concerning physically fitting into the AGA?
