Attached disks (or Orphans) Avamar Proxy Server
Someone makes use of this utility?
I would like to automate the following tasks:
- Check for attached disks (or orphans) on the proxy server
- Detach disks
I located this utility but I wonder if it is a best practice to use it
java -jar /usr/local/avamar/bin/proxycp.jar --listproxydisk --cleanup

If you look on the forums, there are several posts about using this utility for managing the Avamar proxies and making changes in the VMware environment. You can probably automate this task, but I would recommend building good scripting practices around it, such as capturing the output from the command and writing it to a file or publishing the results via email.
In our environment, we (storage and backup team) provision LUNs to the Server Team (VMware) and they provision VMs on them. Our admins often use Storage vMotion to move VMs around, sometimes moving them to datastores that are not in our list in Avamar. We have a cron job we run before the start of the nightly Avamar backup window, that runs proxycp.jar --selectalldatastore - this ensures that we have every datastore in the list for the proxies to backup. We then email the command results to the backup team. This works pretty well for us.
Let us know if that helps!

Karl,
Just make sure "No Vmimage Backups" are running when you run "--listproxydisk --cleanup", otherwise the running backups will fail.

VDDK 6.0 adds functionality to cleanup leftover hotadd mounts automatically so you don't have to do it manually (or via scripting). Its mentioned under fixed issues in the release notes. Avamar 7.2 release notes mentions new feature of Orphan snapshot discovery and remediation so I believe 7.2 will fix issue automatically.

Good reminder, Amol - thanks for mentioning that! Hopefully, if someone reads this post in the future, they'll heed that warning!
