Avamar backup for VMware
i heard of Symentec backup software now support vmware storage API, so it can do VM backup without holding tank, and directly to backup target, i'm wondering whether Avamar's latest edition support this? if support, it will highly decrease the backup time since now staging is needed.

I think next Avamar version 5.0 will support vmware storage API. I think it will launch next week. DataStore Gen 3 documents are available at powerlink now but no 5.0 documents.

Avamar 5.0 does support VMWare Image level backups. It requires vSphere4 and ESX4 hosts. I can tell you from experience the backups take longer than backups with the agent being installed on the MV itself. Also, the more VMs you have, the more Avamar Proxies that will be required to back up the VM images. Avamar sees the VM images similar to Databases.

Avamar dos require that the avamar client be installed on the vCenter server.
