Backup of ESX-Server V4.0 with Avamar v5.0.2.41

Sorry I'm new in the business and therefore need some support:

we've recently upgraded our ESX-hosts from 3.5 to 4.0 (Avamar upgrade to v5.0.2.41 has been done earlier). Now I wonder how to backup them because I didn't found an agent.

For vms I've downloaded the latest proxy-appliance. Does this appliance really need a san view? This wouldn't work in my case because I cannot present LUNs to vms.

How can I backup my ESX4.0 hosts?

How can I backup my vms (without a proxy)?

Any suggestions are highly welcome

Hi,

For you to make backups of VMDKs, is necessary Avamar Proxy.
Avamar Proxy must reside on an ESX Host that contains the mapping LUNs, regarding the Virtual Machines that you want to perform backups.

EX: VM_A = LUN12 = ESX3

Avamar proxy should reside in ESX3 and its properties, map the LUN12.

You said that no SAN. Where are stored the VMDKs? The local disk?

Check the Prerequisites for a backup VMDK by VADP.

You can make backup by Guest Level, installing the agent on each client.

Hi,

what I meant: the Avamar proxy itself hasn't any access to the SAN

because it hasn't a HBA. VMDKs are stored on SAN of course.

You wrote "Avamar Proxy must reside on an ESX Host that contains the

mapping LUNs" - does this mean the proxy is only capable of backing up

the VMs residing on the same ESX-host (we've two of them on every site)?

Kind regards

Hi,

the backup proxy itself should be a VM on one ESX server which has the access to SAN so it will be able to backup VMs there.

You could refer to 'Avamar for VMware Guide 5.0'.

Thanks.

Hi,

after inviting proxy client and acknowledging the message that

invitation has been sent, the proxy client stays unactivated without any

message. I guess, that's the reason for "Failed to initiate a backup or

restore for a virtual machine because no proxy was found to service the

virtual machine" on trying to do a backup?

how can I check state of proxy activation?

Kind regards

Hi,

In Administration, Click Right on Avamar Proxy – Properties.

Set all Luns.

Test backup again.
