Migration from Avamar Only to Avamar + Data Domain

Hello,

is it possible to do a Root-2-Root migration or a normal replication from an Avamar Grid System to a new solution with a AVE with a Data Domain as backup device.

Until now I only heard that this is not possible, but perhaps someone here knows more....

This is one point I have to discuss with all of my customers who want to go from AV Grid to AV + DD, but I never have a good enough answer for them.

If it is not possible, what is the prefered way to change from Avamar Grid to AV+DD? I see only 2 possibilities:

  1. Restore the files and backup them again with the AV+DD solution. But I think this is not the way most customer want to go.
  2. Let the Avamar Grid system run as long until all data is deleted bby running out of the retention. But what if I have files with 2 year retention defined.

We had this same question and asked EMC support and technical specialists on it.  There is currently no way to copy the data from the grid to the DD.  You will have to let it expire while writing new data to the DD.  If you had a second grid+DD you might be able to replicate to the DD on it, but generally replication is similar to similar.

Currently you cannot migrate Avamar backup data stored in a GRID (GSAN) to an Avamar with a DD and have the BU’s stored in the DD.

However, You could use ADMe to migrate this data as a backup copy and have it stored in the target Avamar’s DD

Its not an ideal approach but can be quite effective when the old Avamar GRID has backup retentions of years.

It is true you cannot use replication however you can use a utility called ADMe to migrate copies of backups from a source avamar GSAN to a target avamar with DD and have these stored in the DD.

I think it´s possible with ADME now
