Restore MS SQL to another server in Avamar 4.1
Dear All,
I read the doc, and then found procedures as following:
1. SQL Server must be installed and running.
2. Avamar Windows Client and Avamar SQL Server Client must be installed
and registered with the same Avamar server as the source client.
3. In SQL Server Enterprise Manager, create a new database with the same
name.
IMPORTANT: The filename and location of the database
files and transaction log files must be the same as the original
database.
4. Take the database off-line.
5. In Avamar Administrator, select restore everything to a different location,
browse and select the client and SQL server instance to which the database
will be restored.
6. Restore database.
7. After restore completes, it might be necessary to attach the database in
SQL Server Enterprise Manager
So the requriement is the same database name, instance name, and file location with original database.
Thank you for any comment.
Best Regards,
Dennis Dai

It is not mandatory to have the same instance name on the target i.e (local), so the answer is B.
Option "D" has not specified the name of the database (if we assume database name is same as source then answer is D)
But after reviewing all the options, the answer has to be "B"

If you want to restore to another server with different database name and different paths, you can restore the database as file, then restore from the SQL server from file.
I did try today to restore to another server with different paths using the SQL plugin in Avamar version 5 and works perfect.

Dennis all the steps mentioned are correct, For Step 7 you dont need to attach the database as you already took them "offline" in step 4, after the restore completes it will bring them online.
As mentioned by you earlier, Its mandatory to have the same name and location for database and logs on the alternate server.

Hi,
I am preparing the exam, and confused a question.
An EMC Avamar customer needs to restore an MS SQL database to a different server using the SQL plug-in. The database name on the source server is mydatabase and is in the default instance (local). MSSQL is installed on the source server in C:\MSSQL\Data.
What is the requirement for the target server?
A. The instance name is (local), the MS SQL database is named mydatabase, MSSQL installed on any location
B. MS SQL database is named mydatabase, MSSQL is installed on C:\MSSQL\Data
C. MSSQL database is named anything, MSSQL is installed in C:\MSSQL\Data, the instance name is local
D. The instance name is (local), MSSQL is installed on C:\MSSQL\Data
I choose Answer B, but it is not correct.
Maybe D is the correct.

We have a new feature in Avamar 5.0 for restoring the database with New Name on the same or alternate server, but in case of Avamar 4.1 we need to create the database if you want to perform a restore from Avamar GUI.
If you are performing restore from command line, restore the database using filesystem plugin and restore the database with "REPLACE" option.
