Summary of methods to register and activate an Avamar client
Summary of methods to register and activate an Avamar client
Introduction
Before backing up and recovering an Avamar client, we need to register and activate the client first. This article summarizes several methods to register and activate an Avamar client.
Detailed Information
Methods to register an Avamar client:
1. From the client side:
During the installation of a Linux or Unix client, a prompt will appear asking whether you want to register the client. If you choose to register it, the client will be registered and activated together.
2. From the server side:
Method a):Open Avamar Administrator, Administration -> Account Management, right-click your domain on the left column, click Net Client, input the relevant information and then click OK. If the client entry appears under the domain, this indicates the client has been successfully registered. However, a question mark should be seen before the client entry at this time and this indicates the client has not been activated yet.
Method b):Registration via Avamar Client Manager. We can let Client Manager obtain a list of clients that needs to be activated by means of the LDAP service or CSV file. Please refer to EMC Avamar 6.1 Administration Guide “Loading the list of clients for activation” for detailed information.
Method c):Batch client registration. We can define multiple clients in a single client definition file and then import the file into Avamar Server to register these clients. Avamar supports two formats for the clients definition file: CSV and XML. After defining the file, we can import it via Account Management -> Import Multiple Clients.
Registering an Avamar client will create a client identity on Avamar Server and generate a unique client ID (CID) so that this client can be recognized by Avamar Server. After registering the client, we can activate it.
Methods to activate an Avamar client from the server side:
Method a):Open Avamar Administrator, right-click on the client that needs to be activated and then click Invite Client.
Method b):Batch client activation via Avamar Client Manager. Please refer to EMC Avamar 6.1 Administration Guide “Searching for computers to activate”, “Activating selected computers” and “Activating computers by organizational unit” for detailed information.
Methods to register and activate an Avamar Client from the client side:
Right-click the Avamar icon on the system tray, click Manage -> Activate Client, input relevant information and then click Activate. The client will be not only registered but also activated.
During the process of client activation, Avamar server will send client ID (CID) to the client. The client will encrypt and store it as a file named cid.bin under /install directory path/var. cid.bin includes the name of Avamar Server, client ID (CID), the creation time of the file and etc. If the cid.bin file does not exist or is missing, the client will not be able to communicate with Avamar Administrator Server (mcs).

Hi J.H.,
HP-UX, Linux, and Solaris clients can either be activated during installation or from Avamar Administrator. There is no client-side command to initiate client activation on these computing platforms. During the client installation, we can run avregister as you mentioned to register and activate the client with the Avamar server. For detailed information about how to active HP-UX, Linux, and Solaris clients during the installation, please refer to Avamar Backup Clients User Guide.
For Linux/Unix, we are always using command lines (for example: rpm) to install the client software. We can use the command line (avregister) to activate the client during the client installation. Or we can activate the client from the Avamar Administrator (GUI) after the client installation.
Regarding to the question whether it is recommended to activate a UNIX/Linux client during the GUI installation, I have to say that UNIX/Linux does not have a GUI installation method (actually we use rpm command to install it) and it is both OK to activate the UNIX/Linux client during its installation or activate it from Avamar Administrator (GUI) after its installation.

Register and activate the client with the Avamar server.
Software installation path Steps to start registration
1). Activation Default directory Type the following command: /usr/local/avamar/bin/avregister
2). The client registration and activation script starts and prompts you to specify the Administrator server address.
3). Type the DNS name of the Avamar server and press Enter. The output prompts you to specify the Avamar domain for the client. The default domain is clients. Do not use a slash / as the first character when you type a subdomain. If you use a slash, an error occurs and you cannot register the client.
4). Press Enter to accept the default domain (clients). The output indicates that the activation is successful and registration is complete.

of course the direct command line way is the easiest to script out on a new deploy or 'upgrade' migration:
/usr/local/avamar/etc/avagent.d register MCS domain
but the linux agent activation/registration doesn't warn you that if you have anything in your hosts file matching the ip of the server it will use that instead of the hostname as per hostname command. and if this is common across multiple servers you can get this as they all try and register with the same incorrect host entry:
[root@SERVER1 ~]# /usr/local/avamar/etc/avagent.d register MCS01.backups /clients/somedomain
avagent.d Info: Stopping Avamar Client Agent (avagent)...
avagent.d Info: Client Agent stopped. [ OK ]
avagent Info <5008>: Logging to /usr/local/avamar/var/avagent.log
avagent Error <7531>: Unable to register /clients/somedomain/SERVER1 with Administrator MCS01.backups:28001
'* 110 * Re-registration of account /clients/somedomain/randomalias is not permitted' (110)
