CLARiiON SAN with VMWare SRM?

Hi,

We are using CLARiiON at both head office and remote site.  We are going to connect these 2 sites with optical fibre.

In this way, we plan to use the remote site as a DR site with SAN Replication.

1) We would like to know which software we need for Synchronous SAN Replication so that it works with SRM ?  From the web, it appears that there are a number of choices - MirrorView / RecoverPoint / Replication Manager.  We know that CLARiiON is quite out dated and don't know whether RecoverPoint can be used at our site?

2) In addition to additional disk space (Another DAE) and Replication Software, is there any other EMC Product we need to purchase ?

Your advice is sought.

Thanks

Hello Tony,

Thanks for contacing EMC Community.

1), Both MirrorView and RecoverPoint are supported. RecoverPoint will outperform MV, however MV is much easier to install as it needs only a software enabler to be installed on both arrays. RP on the other hand requires design, cabling, IPs etc.. The Mirrorview/Recoverpoint Adapter for VMware SRM can be downloaded from VMware site.

2) For MV, You will need also to ensure that Snapview enabler is installed on both arrays if you are planning to run test RecoveryPlan as running this test will create snaps of your remote mirrors and present them to the hosts for testing( without impacting the production LUNs). Without this enabler, running test Recovery plan will fail and you will end up with running Recovery Plan directly which will promote the remote mirrors and make the production luns not ready.
For RP, logged Image access will be used for testing and that is an integrated feature in RP.

Naviseccli installer will be needed to be installed on both nodes prior to SRA installation (for MVonly)

SRM will need a seperate DB (not the one used by vCenter)

You can download the EMC SRAs from this link:

Hope that helps

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

From your reply, my understanding is

1) If we use MV, we also need to purchase SnapView

2) We need to download and SRA for both MV and RP

Thanks again

1) Well, I have seen some customers do not use it but it is highly recommended to have it if you want to do a "test Recovery plan". Without it, test will fail and you will have only one option "Run Recovery plan" which promote the remote mirrors and make them RW while the production luns become NR. (Real DR scenario).

2) No, It is either MV or RP depends on what you use so if you have RP already installed then this might be a better option as usually customers use only one type of replication either RP or MV not both. EMC does provide VMware SRM Adapter for both replication technologies.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

We have talked to one supplier and they persuade us to use Veeam ((Instead of SAN Replication and SRM).

Just would like to ask what are the pros of using SAN Replication with SRM ?

Cheers

I cannot give too much details about Veeam but the area of comparison usually comes between VMware Replication vs Array Based Replication.

This document lists the difference between them
