EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F + VMware vSphere 4.1 Update 1 FC Direct Attach support question
Hello experts,
we have been asked to validate the hardware infrastructure described below for use with a very small VMware vSphere 4.1 Update 1 deployment described below:
==================================================
- 1x EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F Dual SP enclosure with Fibre Channel front-end ports.
- 2x FC Direct Attached IBM x3650 M3 hosts each running VMware vSphere 4.1 Update 1. Each host will be equipped with 2x QLogic 4Gb FC Single-port HBAs
==================================================
As per VMware Compatibility Guide I understand FC Direct Attached configurations should be supported to connect ESXi hosts to an EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F System, however VMware has put some footnotes (see image below):
Could you please confirm whether an EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F FC Direct Attached configuration is actually supported for use with the very simple VMware vSphere 4.1 Update 1 deployment described above and whether known limitations exist ?
As per VMware Compatibility Guide I also understand EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F Systems are currently supported for use with VMware vSphere up ESX/ ESXi 4.1 Update 1.
Could you please confirm whether EMC CLARiiON AX4-5F Systems are about to be supported for use with VMware ESXi 5 too ?
Thank you in advance for your support.
Best Regards,
Massimiliano Rizzi

See attached image. Looks like you are good as long as you have the HBAs listed in the attached image

Correct. FC-AL in this case means direct attach

Hi Ernes,
thank you for your quick reply.
I confirm I have the HBAs listed in the attached image.
As per the attached image I understand EMC also supports FC_AL (Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop).
Since Direct attach does use FC_AL protocol I can then deduce EMC also supports Direct Attached configurations.
Am I right ?
Thanks & Regards,
Massimiliano

The configuration that you have supports Direct Attach as long as you have the HBAs listed in the image Ernes posted.
