Hotspare usage

Hi I am asking this question out of curiosity, and wanted to learn more about clariion.

When a disk in a RAID group fails and if it is a 250 GB disk. We have a disk configured as Hotspare and it is of size 500 GB.

How much space in the Hotspare will be used in this case? The complete disk will be used or its just the 250 GB or any other chances?

Hi Jithu,

Usually it will use only 250gb space out of 500gb drive that got kicked in as an HotSpare. Please refer the below mentioned document for more information regarding HotSpare.

pinnas is correct, only the 'in-use' LUN capacity of the failed drive that will be replicated to the Hot Spare.

If you have questions about the operation of VNX features such as hot sparing, I recommend the EMC Unified Storage System Fundamentals for Performance and Availability white paper (a.k.a. Fundies) as a resource.  For example,  the "Global hot sparing" section discusses capacity usage of hot spares.  Fundies is available on Powerlink.
