Hotspares

Hi Everyone,

We usually select the hotspares as the last disk in the enclosure. Is there any technical reason behind it ?

We are also aware, we can select any of the disk in the enclosure as the hotspare and it will work but still wanted to check the reason of selecting the last disk as HS.

I agree. I typically use the last slot in an enclosure also just for easy id and for design consistency, even though in VNX2 (as an example) drive mobility and permanent sparing make it largely irrelevant.

That being said, I would still try to use the usual disk placement guidelines, and try and place an appropriate HS drive on the same bus as the drives it would be sparing for. (Appropriate being speed, size and type).

You can select any of the drives in the enclosure as a hot spare. In CLARiiON, for 30 drives, 1 HS is the recommendation. Mostly we used to select the last drive as hot spare just because we can easily identify the drives. I don't think it will give any performance benefits.
