Is dedupe and compression coming to the NS40?

Jump to solution
We're on 5.6.42, but I don't see any option to enable it on a FS.

it's here ..unfortunatelly it's only file level dedupe and only certain file size is deduped/compressed. It's going to be little check box that you check on the file system and voila. Your TC should be able to fill you in ;)

take a look at release notes for 5.6.43.8

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Hardware/Platforms Documentation > Celerra Network Server > Release Notes

and also "Using Celerra Data Deduplication" technical module.

Hi,

actually you need 5.6.43 - that's why you dont see an option for deduplication.

Version 5.6.43.8
Deduplication
The EMC Celerra file-level data deduplication feature increases file
storage efficiency by eliminating redundant data from the files stored
in the file system. For each file system, file-level deduplication gives
the Data Mover the ability to compress files, and share the same
instance of the data if the files are identical. Deduplication
functionality operates on whole files and is applicable to files that are
static or nearly static.

During deduplication, each deduplication-enabled file system on the
Data Mover is scanned for files that match a specific criteria, such as
last access time and a modification time older than a certain date.
Once a file is found that matches the criteria, the file is
deduplicated¿compressed if appropriate and single instanced. Files
that do not benefit from compression are stored in their original form.
Deleting, modifying, or archiving one instance of a duplicate file has
no impact on any other instances of the file.

The Using Celerra Data Deduplication technical module, P/N
300-008-026 provides detailed information about the deduplication
feature.

I'll attach the white paper - more details are in the Deduplication manual on Powerlink

Arrgh, just missed it-we just upgraded last week to 42.
We just chose not to be bleeding edge, I'll suppose. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for others.

We store a large amount of litigation data in the form of entire hard drive dumps, pst, nsf, etc. These are then run through index and review processes that produces tiff and pdf images for review and markup. We're looking at CAS...

if you are thinking CAS you could look at using DiskXtender for NAS, or Rainfinity to migrate data to Centera.

5.6.43 is available for New installations and brak/fix upgrades - your new system may not have the 5.6.43 code on it depending on when it was built and shipped - but your CE will install the new code on it. However, for normal upgrades (gratuitous upgrades) we are still going to 5.6.42 code. But I understand, if you have the need for the new feature, your CE can request for it on the upgrades for existing boxes as well. Rainer may correct me, if needed.

Thanks,
Sandip

Thanks Sandip. I am getting ready to deploy an ns-480 which i got a few months ago. I would rather get it on this code so the customer can start take advantage of the new functionality instead of going with 5.6.42 and then scheduling another upgrade in a few months.

correct - the goto code for upgrades currently is 42

if you have a reason for 43 like for example needing a bug fix that is only in 43 you can request it for upgrade through your CE and see if it gets approved
