SCOS 7.3

Is SCOS 7.3 available from Co-pilot for the SC4020's?

The reviews sound amazing.

Hi,

It doesn’t look like it has released yet, but it will be coming out for the SC4020.

The idea of Distributed Spare is a great new feature.  Rebuild times will be much faster.  I'm looking forward to it.  I think it's going to be released in October.

I was told by CoPilot a couple weeks ago it is indeed GA.  The "check for update" tool doesn't do anything unless Copilot releases the update to your system.  So you'd want to give them a call so they can do that first, then the new version should show up.

Our experience with SCOS 7.3 is quite horrible up to this point. First of all, the firmware upgrade itself, from 7.2.30 to 7.3.4 went wrong. The second controller started updating and rebooted without the first controller back online, which caused a full blackout on our environment (all paths down to this Compellent).

After that a new feature called 'space optimization' kicked in. This goes over all data in the array to review if it's in the optimal place. That's a good thing you might think, but this also caused data progression to slow down dramatically. The initial run after the upgrade was running for more than 3 days, which almost killed the array because data did not move to the lower tiers anymore filling up all the RAID 10 write tiers. Eventually, this caused the array to start writing to Tier 3 RAID 6, causing a write latency of >2 seconds. #2 that killed our environment.

Next, 7.3.4 has some serious bugs in VMware environments. If you have hosts with ESXi 6 or higher, those will have VVOL protocol endpoints enabled by default. These have the nasty effect of randomly restarting the controllers. It's supposed to be fixed in 7.3.5, so please be aware. If you're lucky, it can also restart both controllers at the same time...

If that's not all, after the SCOS 7.3 upgrade, secure console also does not want to connect 70% of the time. Changing IP back and forth and restarting it makes it work eventually, but it's a pain.

SCOS 7.3 is very buggy, to say the least, be careful if you decide to upgrade!

Just to get another view,

we started fresh with 7.3.1 on SC5020 this June.
No usage issues at all, using with two ESXi 6.5 clusters.
Some management issues with CloudIQ, but those are fixed now.

Few weeks ago upgraded to 7.3.4 which went smoothly.
