Hi
GBIC actually stands for Gigabit Interface Converter, These were the original 1GB adapters and used SC type connectors, the term GBIC is commonly used for all adapters these days, It would be very rare today to find a device that uses these type of adapters.
SFP stands for small form pluggable, and typically use LC type connectors, these were smaller then the SC connectors allowing for higher port density on the switches
SFP+ supports speeds at 8GB and higher depending on the SFP

That's a great question and an excellent answer! This is one of my (many) pet peeves in the Storage industry... GBICs haven't been mainstream for years (although I'm sure there are still a few people out there with TRUE legacy environments who might still have a few). Unfortunately getting rid of the terminology will be like getting people to stop saying they are "dialing a phone number" *lol*
