How can I determine if a Brocade SFP is nearing the end of its lifespan?

Jump to solution

Over time the output power and input sensitivity of an SFP (Tx) deteriorates. You can measure "how much light" is received on an SFP by using web tools and looking on the Tx power:

Also by looking at the Rx power you can see whether an SFP receives enough light to operate without problems.

But my question is: what are the upper and lower limit at which a Brocade SFP operates?

In a Cisco switch you can see a warning level and an error level, but I don't see that in Webtools (Brocade).

I don't have absolute values to check for but changes over time could give you some warning.

For gathering the SFP details at the CLI you can use "sfpshow #" where # is the port number you want to look at. You will get stats on the SFP as well as "Alarm" and "Warn" setting values for some of the stats (preconfigured on the switch).

Also, is there a CLI command to gather these values (Rx and Tx)? If so, I could script it

sfpshow                    Print Serial ID SFP information

Why didn't I try that command? Maybe because the description was misleading? Well, anyway: it works! This is exactly the command I needed!

Thank you!

I have to agree that the description is somewhat misleading. But the content you get is great Much better than a few that seem to be the other way around *lol*
