licenses: ISL trunking license vs trunking license

Hi All,

Seems there is considerable confusion around Trunking licenses .

We will be creating two fabrics  each fabric will have two ISL connections between both switches that will form a Trunk. On ds300 we have Trunking  and Fabric licenses installed and on the ds6510 only a 12 port upgrade license .

I have post the question to EMC licenses dept and was told  i  only need ISL trucking license for the 6510 . Adding to confusion i was told trunking and ISL trucking licenses are the same < huh ??? Does this mean i dont need a Trunking license and Fabric license installed on the 6510 to form a trunk consist of  (two ISL  connection) ?

Additional research  googling  a few posts mentioned  Trunking licenses are  required for all switches that will participating in Trunk

Can someone help clear-up the licensing mystery

Thanks

Hi Darren,

My understanding is as follows.

If you were using just normal ISL's (non-trunking) between switches you don’t need any license.

Yet when ‘trunking’ is in play you do need a license on both switches in the setup.

Trunking overview:-

The trunking feature optimizes the use of bandwidth by allowing a group of inter-switch links (ISLs) to merge into a single logical link.

Trunking is automatically implemented for any eligible ISLs after you install the Brocade ISL Trunking license.

The license must be installed on each switch that participates in trunking.

Documentaion you can refer too:-

This documentation provides a single source of common administrative tasks used by SAN administrators when configuring their switch or fabric.

Per the cookbook:-

Refer to the section:- Trunking overview

DS300B(Hardware reference manual)

The DS-300B supports Interswitch Link (ISL) Trunking as a licensed feature.

Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Trunking (licensable).
