Greetings experts,

What are some features that customers welcome most from this software and how does it compares to others in the market?

Hi Roberto

There are a few key features/use cases that our customers are telling us have a very  high value for them.

First - VCE Vision is a layer of software on our VCE Systems that understands the converged infrastructure and relationship of all the components in context of being in a single system.  In addition VCE Vision understand multi system management and federation of data so if you have multiple VCE Systems within a single data center that you are monitoring you can see them from a single UI.  (Multi Site is coming)  That is huge as you now have intelligence about your converged infrastructure vs. managing discreet parts.  Use Cases and Value grows from there and here are just a few:

1.  Compliance - RCM, Security Hardening (optional module), VTA/VSA Content.  Customers can run compliance scans to see where they are in relation to their RCM compliance, Security Hardening guidelines and when a VCE Technical Alert or Security Alert comes out they can download the content and run a scan to look for those vulnerabilities.  In addition their is a compliance profile editor for situations where a customer may need to modify a profile for their specific environment.   In the case of RCM upgrades - users can easily run a scan to see which components need upgrading to get to their next planned RCM version and through Firmware PrePositioning easily pull down and stage the new software prior to their planned upgrade.

2.  Workload Intelligence - VCE Vision provides information about the virtual layer running on the physical infrastructure.   You can see the VMs and Workloads associated with the physical components.  If as an example you need to make a change to the physical component you would be able to easily identify all the VMs/workloads associated with the physical component and vMotion them and then replace component without impacting the business app.

3.  Key Performance Indicators - there are many metrics aka Key Performance Indicators that VCE Vision provides to allow users to look at storage metrics, cpu metrics, etc. across VCE Systems to assist in making informed decisions in the area of planning and/or to utilize to help troubleshoot an issue that may have come up relative to cpu capacity or performance, etc.

4. User Interface/Dashboard showing the overall health of the VCE System or Systems with ability to drill down to troubleshoot where the underlying issue is.

5. Open API - A key point is that VCE Vision also has an open API and a developer's forum.   We have many eco system management partners and our customers have deployed many of these in their environments.   This API can be leveraged to take the VCE Vision "intelligence" about the converged infrastructure and bring it in to their 3rd party application.   There is an SDK, sample code and VCE System Simulators (downloadable and online) which are fantastic tools to assist with the development and integration process.

I will let others weigh in and add in to this list.  It is a very exciting component to our VCE System and Software Strategy.

How does the software know that new updates are available and my current infrastructure is due for an upgrade ?  If you get that information using some formal channels like ESRS, how would that work at dark sites ?

Do you have hooks into application layers, say i want to run Cerner and EPIC. What is considered good response time for one application could be not acceptable to another. Can i set my own thresholds on different KPI's ?

If i am buying converge infrastructure from VCE, i expect this software to be included in the package.  You are selling me infrastructure in a box, i don't have to buy yet additional software to manage it all.

Thank you for the great questions.   Here are comprehensive answers:

Answers to Question Group 1: VCE alerts customers when new firmware and hypervisor software releases (i.e., VCE Release Certification Matrix Content) have been pre-tested, certified for interoperability and made available.  Customers can then download a description (i.e., an RCM Profile) of the new set of releases and use the VCE Vision dashboard to run an assessment on their VCE Systems to validate which system components (e.g., storage arrays, compute blades, switches, hypervisors, etc.) require upgrades to the new releases.  The RCM Profiles and the new releases are downloaded from the VCE Download Center in the VCE Support Portal.  Also, because dark sites are on private networks, the RCM Profiles and the new releases themselves can be manually downloaded onto a trusted computer that has Internet access and then installed manually by connecting to the dark site.

Answers to Question Group 2: Instead of out-of-the-box hooks into third-party applications, like the Cerner and Epic applications that you mentioned, VCE Vision Software has an open API along with a Software Development Kit and sample code which can be used to create integrations.  Out-of-the-box, VCE Vision Software does, however, display the status of the hypervisor, network, compute, and storage infrastructure layers, and lets you know which infrastructure components support each workload (i.e., virtual machines).  So far, our software development has focused on delivering KPIs in selectable time-series increments and enabling browser-style search across multiple VCE Systems, including advanced query according to selectable operands and parameters.  Currently, we are examining our customers' KPI analytics and thresholding requirements -- and how we can add value beyond third-party monitoring tools which the VCE Vision Software API can integrate with -- to guide the long-term development strategy of our software's health KPI capabilities to be announced in the future.

Answers to Question Group 3: Currently, VCE Vision Software consists of three modules, two of which are included in the sale of all new VCE Systems.  A third module is priced separately and optional.  The two included modules are the VCE Core Platform (providing discovery and a multi-system dashboard) and the RCM Compliance Management Module (providing firmware/hypervisor software release certification assessment).  The optional component is the Security Compliance Management Module.

Are there any plans to align the Visions management pack for vRops development with the Visions core product and VMware's vRops product? Vision MP is currently supporting vRops 6.1 only when connected to Visions 2.x.

The vROps management pack is owned by VMware and is a part of their software portfolio and strategy.   Given that, the  vROps management pack is not a part of the VCE Vision Roadmap.   As far as alignment, VCE and VMware have joint product interlock meetings but each company owns their individual roadmaps and schedules.   You are correct the current vROps management pack for VCE Vision v6.1 was built and today supports VCE Vision 2.6.   We would need VMware  to provide any roadmap related information for vROps and vROps management packs as we are not able to speak on their behalf regarding their roadmap.

This Ask the Expert event has officially ended, but don't let that retract you from asking more questions. At this point our SME are still welcomed to answer and continue the discussion though not required. Here is where we ask our community members to chime in and assist other users if they're able to provide information.

Many thanks to our SMEs who selflessly made themselves available to answer questions. We also appreciate our users for taking part of the discussion and ask so many interesting questions.

Hi Richard

We have a developer portal https://vce.com/developers where you can download our SDK and Simulator.  You will find some documentation there.   If you go to this link http://www.vce.com/products/vscale/vce-vision

you can find some of the high level info.   As far as full set of documentation you will not find that there, I believe that is on our download center where you need an account/entitlement to download.   I will send you an email with specifics on how to get that.   thanks  Maureen

Hi Richard.  Here are some additional resources as well.  These would be at a very high level:

VCE Vision Data Sheet http://www.vce.com/asset/documents/vce-vision-software-data-sheet.pdf
VCE Vision Whitepaper http://www.vce.com/asset/documents/vce-vision-security-whitepaper.pdf
VCE Vision Whitepaper http://www.vce.com/asset/documents/vision-whitepaper-achieving-data-center-agility.pdf
