Broken screen during transit to repair depot

I sent out my dell laptop to get my battery replaced under warranty. Dell sent me a prepaid box with packaging materials. My laptop was in perfect condition when I sent it out and when it arrived to the repair depot it had a cracked screen and I was being charged $249 dollars to repair it, but I told them that my computer was in perfect condition. they told me to make the complain to FedEx, I did and FedEx accepted. Since dell was the one that paid for the package FedEx sent them a check for the damage. Now that the check is in Dell’s hands they say their policy does not accept checks. What can I do in this case ?
FedEx is not allowed to send the check to me because it is Dell who paid for the box. 
why did dell even tell me to contact FedEx and make a claim when this policy exists
