Defining hotspare for a disk group

Hello,

I have an MD3400 attached to an MD1200, with a disk group for MD34 and another disk group for MD12.

When adding a disk that is in MD12 to be hotspare it protects both disk groups, however I want to protect only the disk group of MD12. Because my disk group MD34 is not important.

Can I do this?

Thank you.

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

The general rule when configuring a hot spare drive is to use the largest drive size that you have available so that any drive that fails can be covered by the hot spare.  If you were to make your 3TB drive your hot spare, then it will only cover the 3TB drives if one was to fail.  Since your hot spare drive is a 6TB drive it will cover both the 3TB & 6TB drives.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

You can’t do that.  The only way that is possible is if you have different drive sizes.

Hello,

could it clarify better?

What do you mean by (The only way that is possible is if you have different drive sizes.)

In MD34 I have 3TB disks and in MD12 I have 6TB disks.

Thank you.

Hello,

Perfect. I would have to have a 3TB disk or less than 6TB to protect only the MD3400 disk group.

This way the other disk of 6B would protect the disk group of MD1200.

Thank you.
