Dell MD3200i unreadable sectors

Jump to solution

Hi there

We have 2 of these disc units and they are performing lovely, however, we had a disc failure at the weekend, and I failed the disc, re inserted a new one and the array did its thing by rebuilding the RAID 5 array onto the hot spare and then once completed it then copied itself back to the replaced disc.

Upon the re build of the array, it came across 410 unreadable sectors, but upon reading various Dell forums this is not as catastrophic as it may first appear.

Our array has re built itself, all of the virtual machines are working perfectly and I can see no data loss. It seemed at the time the best course of action to keep going with it.

Now as everything seems to be satisfactory, is there a way of clearing off the attention alarm, so we can get back to a blue light, I do not want to do anything to upset it as its working fine at the moment, or should I be getting the data off and do something to it?

Any advice would be most welcome, but like I said there was a post by a Dell technician that said it was not always necessary to destroy the array and start again.

Thanks

Kev

Hi,

Is the enclosure LED that is amber or the drive LED? Try saving and then clearing the logs Page 244 http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/md3200i_md3220i_owner%27s%20manual_en.pdf

Thanks for replying

I will have a look at that tomorrow, but I am sure its the enclosure but will check the drives again.

Going forward, I take it its okay overall?

Done that mate but the light is still on, I think it wont go back to blue because the array in the storage manager is still showing the 410 unreadable sectors.

What would you advise there, considering its all working okay so far......

Thanks

You can try to run a consistency check and see if it can fix the errors.

I am quite keen to clear the Unreadable Sectors , via the Modular Disk Storage Unit. I take it this will have no ill effects on the disc shelf and the VHD and data on it?

I am quite keen to get the unit back to a blue light on the front not the flashing orange!

If I type Yes in the box and clear them, does that mean they are still marked as unreadable, but the log is just clear. We have not noticed any ill effects from the rebuild of the array and the VMs on there are all still working and have had fresh block level backup completed against them.

Thanks

Right, it should just stop using those sectors and clear the error.
