Perc5i battery is dead, server locks up.

PerHello,

We have 55 Dell servers, but one of the 2950's with Windows Storage Server 2003 has started acting up and running slow!  It locks up or runs so slowly we can't tell it's up.  It has the latest patches and drivers.  The Dell Open Manager does not show errors on the drives, just the battery.  We are getting a System event message that the Perc5i battery is dead.   Will swapping the battery for a new one lose the RAID configuration (and then require restoring the 1TB RAID drive from tape)?  Is there a way to make the battery swap safe?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks, John

The server needs to be shutdown to replace the battery, it's a safe proceedure. The battery maintains the contents of the cache ram if the server looses power. When the battery is faulty caching is disabled which means poor performance.
