Can a ddboost storage unit also be used as a CIFS share?
I have a client that is implementing Data Domain with DDboost. They have 2 different backup products, TSM for file systems backup, and Veeam for VM backups. What they would like to do, is have Veeam backup to a DDboost storage unit. Then mount that storage unit as a CIFS share, so TSM can write it out to tape for offsite storage. Is this even possible? Can a storage unit also be used as a CIFS share?
If so, how can this be done?

jmshort,
My name is Patrick Betts and I'm with Data Domain Support. We do not support creating CIFS shares on DDBoost Storage Units that are writable. The boost user owns that data and any CIFS ACLs that become applied to the data inside the share can disrupt the boost functionality. Here is a KB with more information:
181985 : Remove Storage Unit Access Privileges Caused by CIFS Share Permission
https://support.emc.com/kb/181985
If you must access a LSU with a CIFS share, please do not allow writing. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Best Regards,
Patrick Betts

you can because it's just a directory on dd file system. Question is why ? TSM has no idea what those objects on file system are. Let's say you experience major disaster at your primary site, you go get another veeam server and you restore those objects from TSM. Will veeam be able to re-import/re-audit them to actually know what's on those objects ?

Why make backup of the backup? I believe I read v8 also added some tape out enhancements (not sure how much and at which level as I don't use Veeam) so it would be logical to automate this via Veeam (if possible).

This doesn't directly answer the question but if the goal is to get a copy offsite why not replicate to another data domain system? You would be better served to do the tape out from your backup application if you don't have another DD system to receive replication.

This is a level 40 Document and Viewable to customers.
below is for your information
Access privileges of the files and directories of a storage unit were changed by the CIFS client. Contents under the storage unit directory may be read only, or have CIFS ACLs. This could occur when a CIFS share has been established, and may be caused by:
From Windows, the ost directory or some of its contents have been set with CIFS ACLs and access privileges have been changed by the Windows client.

Thank you for your reply. I have friend told me that his datadomain is configured as one pool for ddboost as vtl i think.. So my question can i create cifs one this pool or we have the ability to resize this pool and get a free space without ddboost for cifs.
Not that i have zero knowledge about dadadomain.
