Move Dell om essentials to new server OS

I'm wanting to upgrade the OS on my Dell om essentials server from 2008r2 to 2012r2. Is it possible to stand up a new sever with same host name and IP and point a new Dell om essentials installation to our remote SQL server to maintain all om essentials settings such as existing alerts, managed systems, groups, same settings, etc?

Or should I do an in place OS upgrade on top of existing server? We typically do fresh OS installs.

Hi, thanks for the query.

It is not recommended to upgrade OS while OME is installed. The way forward for you would be to take backup of OMEssentials database, restore it on new server, and then while installing OME, target this pre-created database using custom installation flow.

How to install OME using custom settings, refer this white paper:

How to backup and restore database, refer this white paper:

The DB is on a remote SQL server so I know I'm good there related to backups.  IF I were to install OME on a new server and point to this DB are you telling me all of my OME settings, alerts, groups, managed devices, etc will be intact?  The idea would be to use same hostname and IP of existing OME server.

Will I lose any settings, etc if I were to migrate to a new server?

If the DB is already remote, then steps needed are lesser. You need to first uninstall the current setup and make sure to retain the database when asked during the process. Then install OME (same version as previous) on new machine and target the same remote database using custom installation flow.

Yes, all your settings and data will be intact.
