0x0000008e and 1x0000008e errors

Greetings.

I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with Optiplex 745 and 755 units with these errors.

I have received then at random times. I have reimaged with the original Dell software (shipped to me via tech support). I have replaced the motherboard and memory. I have swapped out with a known good HDD. Yet, I get a blue screen with 0x0000008e.

The reimaged unit is the original software, not on our network. I left it overnight running. I did not install any other software.

The minidump with the original Dell software is here:

I have three PCs doing this. I'm in the process of talking with Dell and may try a new Proc since it's happening with the original software.

The error is refering to probable hardware and possibly memory. It's been replaced with new from Dell and swapped with known good memory. Also swapped slots as well. (regardless, motherboard was replaced)

Thanks ahead of time

JAB

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck.  Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem.  Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003.  This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG.  This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG.  This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

ok, I'll try the manual install of Windows. I'm just not sure what change it'll do since our image has been tested and runs on hundreds of Optiplex 745s. The old and new, however many times I reimage it haven't worked on these three PCs, yet works fine on close to 900-1000.

But, for troubleshooting, I'll do it.

Thanks again

For future use and anyone searching. I installed the original software and used the updated drivers from Dell. Same issues.

I received a new Processor from Dell and all worked fine. The Processor was giving me Blue screens and such.

thanks for your help.

Hello buxmeister, Thes errors may indicate an issue with some of the memory modules or device drivers.

I would acquire the Memtest program from Here, unzip and burn to a CD and run a test of the memory to insure there are no errors relating to memory.

If you can boot to the system, you may want to try and run a hardware test from the Dell Hardware Diagonostic Utility within the BIOS, if your system has one.

Some hardware drivers than can cause errors of this type, are audio and video drivers.

You may want to make sure you have the latest drivers for these devices.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

I ran Memtest a few times. No errors. I also received new memory and a system board from Dell.

I ran numerous diagnostics General diags, full HDD and memory tests, etc. I have had no errors.

Our image has worked on hundreds of Optiplex 745's. I have also used our old image and the basic software from Dell, again same BSOD.

Sometimes it'll lock, sometimes it'll run for a couple days and then BSOD. I have had it on over the weekend and it's been fine though.

I can't use these machines in production and looking for help. Still talking with Dell tech support though.

Thanks again

JAB

Hello buxmeister, You wrote>Quote: The reimaged unit is the original software, not on our network. I left it overnight running. I did not install any other software.

Did you create an image from the original software on the computer as installed?

If so, I have had issues with some of Dell's original software that was corrupted, as well as the Dell Recovery restore image.

I had many of the same issue you mention until I reformated the hard drive and did a fresh install of the OS.

This resolved my BSOD, lockups, hangs, freezes, slow responsiveness, etc.

After a week or so of getting none of the original issues, I removed the Dell Recovery Restore partition, since it appeared to not be a valid image, and recovered that disk capacity.

This may or may not be helpful, but it did work for me.

I installed the software from Dell. They looked up the software that came in the original box and shipped it to me. This way it can verifiy hardware or software. Also, any processor replacement deemed necessary can't happen until Dell tries this.

Still with my image and the older image, of which both work fine on the Optiplex 745, the original software shouldn't really matter, and it didn't; same BSOD.

I have formatted and reimaged a few times. This is the original software now. I'll try reformatting and reinstalling, I've tried just about everything else :)

Cheers

JAB

Hello buxmeister, Are you saying that Dell shipped you a new set of software disk, just like the software that came on the system originally?

Since you have tried almost everything else, this may resolve your issue.

The original software could have been defective. I have encountered this in the past.

Just as an added precaution, I would delete the original OS partition and then create a new one, just in case there may be a problem with the MBR on the current hard drive. Not likely, but possible.

I always do this when installing a new OS.

Just a thought

Yeah, it was. I'm going to email them here shortly with my results. I was Windows XP home edition (not sure why since we're a business. they looked it up and showed that xp home was the software shipped with it). I did not fdisk the HDD manually. I'll try it though in the future. Our images do format drives, but not fdisk or anything like that. There's only one full HDD partition.

Hello buxmeister, There is not much difference in Windows XP Home and XP Pro. One of the main differences is that you can only connect to up to 5 network devices at a time with Home and up to 10 with XP Pro. There are a few other small differences, but you should not tell any difference in the two.

You want need to fdisk the hard drive. In the OS setup process, there will be a screen that will ask where you want to install the OS.

It will give you an option to delete the partition, and ask are you certain. Press L to delete. Just say yes and the partition will be deleted.

Then it will show as unrecogonized, or something like that. Just choose to create a new partition. Then you will be asked for the maximum size.

Choose yes. You will see two partitions. The smaller is used to store the OS setup files and cannot be seen within Windows, except in the Administrative Tools Utility.

Choose the larger partition and choose Quick Format. The install should then proceed normally.

When you get to the desktop, install the chipset drivers first, as they control much of the systems on the motherboard.

Then install the video drivers, the network drivers, the audio drivers, and any other drivers.

Trying to recall this from memory so I may have left out a step or two, but this is close.

I have installed Windows OS well over a thousand times, so I don't always look at the text on the screen. I just do it automatically.

Hope this helps.
