Doh! my extra 2x 4GB arrived yesterday, but one of them was faulty.
So Now I've got 14 GB in my 755 SFF (3x 4GB and 1x 2GB).
I am pleased to report that the Optiplex 755 USFF supports 4GB RAM in each slot.
Two of the 4GB Patriot RAM sticks suggested by SpeedStep with the A19 version of the BIOS is working perfectly.
Thanks again everyone for your quick input!
You never get 16 or 8 but rather 16 or 8 minus the video frame buffer stolen from system ram.
IF its the correct ram and you have EMT64 cpu AND 64 bit os it works fine. The correct NON BUFFERED, NON REGISTERED, NON ECC ram is not available anymore.Only the models that have no onboard intel video like the precision 380 etc allow all 8 gigs to be used when you use 2 gig ddr2 modules.
1.) I was so happy that GzBz reported that 16gb ram was working on Optiplex 755
2.) I just tested 12gb on my own 755 using 2x4gb - Crucial 4gb, 240-PIN UNBUFF DIMM 512MX64 DDR2PC2 - 5300 -- CT51264AA667 -- 1856928
and 2x2gb - EDGE 2GN581608
Can't wait to try 16gb (or more???)
3.) Really not happy that Dell Specs officially max 755s with 8gb. I was not able to research an answer to know what specifically limits the max ram a motherboard can use... anybody knows??

You have to remember PC makers can only test systems with what's available at the time of manufacture. Back when this system was being developed, large RAM modules probably weren't even available or so expensive users wouldn't buy them... And once a spec is set for the model, they don't typically change it.
