4600 with a stuck closed disk drive
my top drive is stuck closed any attempt to open comes with an error message

Disk drive? Floppy or optical?
Optical drives usually have a small hole on the front of the drawer for emergency release. Straighten a paperclip and gently push it into that hole until the drawer pops open.

I have the same problem with a Dell 4600 - the optical drive will not open. I have tried the button on the front, software access to tell the drive to open, and yes, I tried the pinhole button on the front. No luck! I have also seen a 4600 for sale on Craigslist with the same problem - is this common? Any one have ideas on opening the drive?
This drive is a CD R/W drive - not a DVD.
