The D8250 does not support SATA, to add a SATA HD, you will have to buy and install a PCI SATA controller card.

Whats looking for the biggest that is good value, 500gb seems to be at the forefront of capacity/value, with 750gb a bit pricey? Is that correct to assume. Many Thanks Ali

If you are refering to the Dimension 8250, then you can use any ATA/IDE/EIDE [aka PATA] hard drive.

With the D-8250 model you need XP-SP1 or XP-SP2 and BIOS version A02 or later installed, for the BIOS to support a hard drive of that size.

Starting with that BIOS version A02, 48-bit LBA support was added to the BIOS, for hard drives larger than 137gb.

Whats the difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133. Does the dimension 8250 support both. I have updated bios etc to the most recent version.

Both the ATA-100 and ATA-133 is compatible to the D-8250.

The difference between ATA-66/ATA-100/ATA-133, is the interface, not the speed.

7200rpm hard drives can deliver and sustain approximately 66MBps, no matter what the interface.

So in conclusion, without having to do any other hardware updates what is the best type of drive to go for, performance wise? ATA-100 or 133? Many Thanks for your help Ali

The performance of either a ATA-100 or ATA-133 hard drive, installed in the D-8250 system, will be the same.

Read the Dimension 8250 specifications.
