8700 volume too low

I have an older set of JBL computer speakers. The speakers are on one cable. The only speaker port on the back of the 8700 that seems to work is the black port. I checked all the volume controls and they are currently at maximum but sound coming out is only above a whisper.

Hi Diver123,

Thanks for posting in the Dell Community.

The XPS 8700 is shipped with the Realtek ALC3861 audio controller which supports 7.1 channel audio. The audio jacks on the rear follow the below color coding :

• Gray ->         Middle Surround Speakers for 7.1 systems
• Black -> Rear Surround Speakers for 5.1 and 7.1 systems
• Orange -> Subwoofer and Center out
• Light Blue ->         Stereo Line In
• Lime Green -> Line-Out, Front Speakers, Headphones
• Pink ->         Microphone

You may simply plug the speakers to respective connectors to get desired output. Once you plug the connector, the computer will ask you about the type of connector you have plugged in. You may configure the speakers using the Dell Audio utility.

How to Change Audio settings:
1. Launch the Search Charm and type Realtek Audio in the search box.
2. Launch the Realtek Audio utility from the left hand pane.

I'm not sure how your one cable is feeding 2 speakers, but they will have to be configured to the specifications above in order to work.  Additionally, the speakers will need to be amplified to put out audio above a whisper.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Robert
