8900 Special Edition Upgrades

Just purchased the Special Edition 8900 with the SSD and TB hard drives.

Would like to upgrade the GPU from the GTX 960 to the 970.  Even though the specs says the 460W power supply would work, all other sources, including NVIDIA says a minimum of a 500W PS.  My question is can the 460W be upgraded?  If so, any recommendations.  The higher the wattage the less strain on the power supply, maybe a 750W ?  Would an upgraded PS and the 970 fit in this case / motherboard?

Yes, you can upgrade the PSU and the graphics card, and IMO, a GTX 970 is a great upgrad.

Checkout the GTX graphics card upgrade thread for the XPS 8700, since the case is very close.

The limiting factor for the PSU is the depth.

I have a seasonic X-650 in two 8700s and it is a snug fit but works perfectly, and with the silent fan the system is very quiet.

I would link to some suggestions, but the forum ends up blocking my links.

the EVGA "G2" or "GS" models look really good, and anything built by Seasonic tends to be good.

You'll also hear some will get by with the stock PSU, but it isn't worth it to me.

lets see if this gets through the link police.

Size: ATX power supplies are 5.9 x 3.4 inch and the length varies, and the 8700/8900 cannot take a long ( or deep ) PSU. I think the OEM PSU is 5.5 or 5.6 inches.

This is about as large as will fit easily.

150mm x 86mm x 160mm
5.90" x 3.40" x 6.30"

the 160mm or 6.3" is the length and any longer starts to conflict with the top USB mounts.

Here are some I've used or own or have been folloing and tempted to buy.

Seasonic X-650
Watch for this to go on sale. It can get as low as $80 after MIR.

I own three of these and two are in xps 8700s. one with a GTX 970, one with a GTX 770.

Similar seasonic but with platinum rating vs gold.

I think this is one of the best 650W on the market right now.

Another EVGA branded, but built by seasonic:
