8920: Does it support 48GB RAM?

The 8920 comes with 2 modules of 8GB each. Can I add 2*16 GB Modules in the vacant slots to make it 48GB?

I just got my XPS 8920, which came with 2 8gb modules.  I bought 2 16gb modules, and installed the 2 16gb in slots 1 and 3 and the 2 8gb in slots 2 and 4.  I've now got 48gb in total and all is working fine.  So I think the answer that mentioned "I have trouble believing that the memory configuration matrix shown actually shows ALL the available memory configurations" was accurate, as 48gb seems to work well.

Yes up to 64GB but who would need that much ram? Matching pairs of memory w/ same specs as installed ram work best. See Crucial's recommendations.

Look at a post earlier than your related to 16GB or RAM configuration. Dell confirmed that a 48GB RAM option is not available. I am trying to do the same configuration and was hoping that they supplied 16GB as a single chip.  I was initially going to take it to 32GB and in the future to 64GB.

They have a table with all of the supported memory configurations in that post.

Mary a use for 64GB of memory would be running multiple VM's that require with 8GB or 16GB

I have trouble believing that the memory configuration matrix shown actually shows ALL the available memory configurations. The service manual for the XPS 8910 (page 78) shows the same matrix as for the XPS 8920 yet my XPS 8910 came with a single 16GB memory module (not shown in the matrix) and it works fine so obviously there is more than one memory configuration for 16GB. Makes you wonder what other available memory configurations are not shown. The thing that is obvious about the matrix is that all memory modules are configure to operate in dual channel mode.

I just notice a problem in the service manuals. For the XPS 8920, on page 76, Table 2, the memory configuration matrix shows memory module pairs in slots 1 & 2 but the note above the table says to use slots 1 & 3 for two memory modules. The Table and note in the service manual for the XPS 8910 are consistent with each other. If you use the color of the memory securing clips to denote matching memory channels then you should use slots DIMM1 & DIMM2, which would make the table for the XPS 8920 correct but the note wrong and both the table and note incorrect for the XPS 8910.
