Adding PCI-e card with USB 3.0 Ports to Inspiron 3650

Hello,

I would like to add a PCi-e card containing 4 USB 3.0 slots to my Dell Inspiron 3650.

I know that I will need to power the PCI-e card, Although I know the the PCI-e card comes with a power slot I have no clue about how to connect it to the PC power supply.

Since I don't think that theInspirion 3650 comes with a free power cable:

  • what type of power cable do I need?
  • on the PC end, where should I connect the power cable?

Thanks,

Hi ponteareas,

Thanks for posting.

The card should have it's own power connection, but not knowing which card you're adding, my suggestion would be to look at the MB diagram in this manual and connect your power cable (which also should be supplied by the card manufacturer, if not contact them for the power cord http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&sku=a7908578) to the main power connector #8.  http://dell.to/2g1z3st

To add to what Robert said...

According to the specs, the Inspiron 3650 has two USB3 ports on the front panel (#5 in the front view photo) and four USB2 ports on the rear panel.

So do you need more than two USB3 and that's why you're considering a PCI-e card?

I bought the Inspiron 3650 one month ago, and just 2 USB 3 ports is not enough.
