Aftermarket PSU Compatibility with Optiplex 3040 MT

Jump to solution

I would like to replace the PSU on the 3040 MT with an EXTERNAL aftermarket unit. First, I need more power to run a better GPU and multiple drives. Second, I prefer the heat outside the case anyway. I am using the Moddiy 24-pin to 8-pin Dell Mobo adapter cable.

Someone said that the Antec EarthWatts EA-380D Green would NOT power on my computer (actually they said the EarthWatts series would not work) though they failed to elaborate in any way as to why.

According to the specs I can find, there is no reason why it should not work provided the cables are run correctly.

Is there anyone here that can expand on WHY or the EarthWatts series will not work? If it does not work, can someone please recommend a PSU of 400 watts more or less that WILL work. Again, provided the cables are taken care of.

Thanks very much!

The EA380 does not have enough power.  The problem is BASIC.

You are using a single Rail set of 12v and the Max on that rail set is 336W not 380W

You don't get to use all of the Power maxed out on all of the rails EVER.

EVGA 500B1  works fine with the moddiy Adapter.

The EA380 has LESS POWER than the Dell Unit which has 16.5 +16 +.84 = 33.34 Amps on 12v

17 +15 is 32 Amps

Unknown about the EarthWatts series or running an internal power supply outside of the chassis. Dell never tested an internal 400w power supply in this model. This one appears to have the same dimensions as ours. Be sure to check their return policy.
